Hydrogen Peroxide in the Humidity?
    #1485706 - 04/23/03 10:23 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Using the perlite humidification tek, it is suggested that a healthy amount of hydrogen peroxide is added to the water that is poured into the perlite. My dogs question is:
-does the condensation on the walls of the terrarium and the humidity in the air have the ability to kill off contamination inside the terrarium, or does it just keep the perlite/water mix contam. free? What final step should he use to sterilize the grow environment before putting his birthed cakes into the terrarium? Will a couple sprays of bleach/water mix into the terrarium dissipate enough so as not to harm the mycelium, or should I trust the hydrogen peroxide in the perlite?-
I'm confused, his terrarium was very sterile before he put in the perlite, now it doesn't look so clean no longer. In addition, he may have let some contams in with his hands while doing final prep. procedures after the perlite was introduced. All responses are greeted with excitement.

Contamination in your fruiting chamber if you are mostly clean is usually not a problem. As long as you clean out your perlite every few grows, and keep it fanned you should not have problems. h2o2 breaks down very easily from h2o2 to o2. It's a very unstable molecule, so my GUESS - though just a guess, is that the spore killing effect of the h2o2 is vastly reduced during the diffusion of the liquid into condensation on the walls, it may still reside at lower percentages, but since light is a major contributor to breakdown, and the diffusion would most likely expose even the most minute particles to a lot of light.

Hope that helps.

The main reason for H2O2 in the perlite is to keep contamination from getting a foothold in the perlite, but condensed H2O2 on the walls will also tend to keep contamination down.

You don't need to sterilize the fruiting chamber; you just need to sanitize it. If you clean it with bleach, rinse it with clean water afterward.

One of the main disadvantages of perlite is that it gets nasty quickly. Add H2O2 per the tek to minimize this. You'll have to remove and clean or replace the perlite from time to time.

If the cakes are fully-colonized before you birth them, they'll be pretty well able to fight off contamination. You don't need a sterile environment, only a clean one. Wash your hands before you open the chamber or handle the cakes and you'll be OK.

Good luck!
