Hydrogen Peroxide / Water solution wetting casing material ?
    #1465819 - 04/17/03 08:10 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Greets,
Having had a huge contam problem with my last batch (I've discovered and remedied the problem) I am more than paranoid about them now.  When I case my jars, I use a 1:1 mixture of perlite/vermiculate as the bottom layer, and as the top layer I use a spaghnum / ver / per mix that I've experimented with.  My question is this, can I use a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) and water in a 1:10 ratio (thus diluting 3% store-bought hydrogen peroxide to a .3% concentration) to wet these layers with?  I usually soak the bottom layer and get the top layer "moist but not wet".  Would this be recommended?  Also, I usually get each layer moister than needed, put in a cake pan (seperate pans), cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 250F for 3 hours.  What are your thoughts on this?  which method would be best?  I appreciate the help!

aviod the perlite in the lower layer, perlite doesnt hold water well and it is non-nutritive...in a casing it's useles....or at least thats my opinion, and oven sterilization is fine, but you should use a hydrometer of some type to find out how wet the casing is...if it feels damp, but little water is squeezed out that is perfect....

I'd suggest holding off on any peroxide at all until/unless you see cobweb mold. Then put it in a sprayer and you can use it full strength right out of the bottle. Mycelium doesn't like peroxide, but will recover from it. Cobweb mold will literally disappear before your eyes when sprayed with H2O2.
