Dude needs a cheap tool to cut plastic..
    #3514241 -

What's a cheap tool to cut through those big storage bins? Dude was making a glove box and found it nearly impossible to cut with a cheap plastic cutter at walmart.

I'm no Binford Tool Girl but doesn't the plastic melt from the friction? Otherwise, I think I may add one to my holiday wish list.

depends how thick it is, but you could just get metal wire and heat it up till it's really hot and just slide it through, it'll slice through it like butter. it might smell really fuckin nasty, though.

I've tried it on multiple rubbermaids and sterilites, if you use a PVC blade, it cuts them fine. At least through 5 types of tubs I've tried. I also used the saw on a swiss army knife for a couple rubbermaids the first time I cut them down. Its a wood saw but it worked ok. A dremmel would be far superior..

I thought about an electric knife I have too for cutting turkey but I'm not sure how well it will work with the two blades and such.

I use a hotknife with a heated blade cuts like butta (almost  ) I also use holesaws for smaller holes (up to 3in.) Important take your time when cutting plastic and DON'T force things or it will shatter :frown:  GL

I think you will trash one of those before it does much good for you ,  the elec knife .

Hey if it worked well , why stop now ? The hacksaw .
Swiss Army knife ... what were you making a career of it  :smirk:
And you did say "cheap" did you not ? Dremel is awesome little tool , works good on sex too I bet  But can cost you 50$ and up to buy a decent one with attachments , the little dremel bandsaw costs 80 or more I believe .
Use a faster cutting blade next time , one for metals, cuts will be smooth and quick
You could always go with the hot knife method , but be prepared to get high on burnt plastic fumes

All sarcasm is meant in good fun .

Get a small jar, fill it with isopropyl, light it. Get any knife w/o a serrated edge, heat..cut..if things slow down..reheat..keep cutting =) just one way, seems many have been previously posted. ~D

Radio-shack sells a really cheap soldering iron...

File the tip down to a flat tip, like a screwdriver.

Plug it in and press against the plastic, when it starts to melt, work fast and you will not get burn or carbon debris. The rounded lip can just be peeled right off after, or pryed off with a butter knife.

Turn it off, or unplug it if it starts to smoke the plastic.

Real cheap way to do this is to grab a butter knife with a good pot holder, and press the knife onto a stove burner that is on low or med-low. Then you just carve like normal.

If you want to get real technical, you can drill a small hole into the soldering iron tip, and push a thinner wire or small nail into the hole, so it is tight, or wrap the extra wire around the tip of the iron. This will give you better control of the heat... Move closer to the tip for a hotter cut, move further away for a colder cut.

I use the soldering iron myself. I had one because I do stained glass and it slices through the plastic like butter and doesn't stick to iron at all. It's all I use now after several failed attempt with other things.
