I once had to cut through a smaller amount of hard hard plastic.. I used a soldering iron to some success (maybe best for starting your cut) but what seemed to work well also was to set a handsaw on the stove, let it get reaalll hot, then push it through.

it was hard, chemically stinky work.

I would not do what you are doing. Get a rubbermaid with a seethrough bottom part, and enough light will actually get through that without modifying the hood. Plus, you don't damage your rubbermaid in case you decide to use a fishtank next time. (my friend likes fishtanks)

If you have access to a jig saw, they work great. They will work on rubbermaid containers (like a hot knife through butter). They also work for cutting the plexiglass. A keyhole saw (hand operated) will work, but is more labor intensive.

As for containers, my koi have went away from containers with clear sides. They have covered their clear sides with paper/cloth and use a plexiglass window on the top. Their sporocarps tended to grow every which way but up. They tend to grow up now. Not a big deal either way though.

My cock uses a rubbermaid container 2'x2'x10"(LxWxH). It has clear sides and a white top. It turns the thing upside down so light can come in.
