I wouldn't reccomend doing it yourself. I had the same problem. I called all the glass cutting places aorund my house and everyone refused except one guy. He said he wasn't responsible if it broke, but he'd try. I think it cost me like 10 or 12 bucks. If you do it yourself it will probably break.

OK. Glass cutting realy isn't that tough if your not stupid. As long as you don't drill through too quick. It's even possible to drill with a normal carbide metal bit but not real intelligent. The best and safest way is to put household oil on the bit then use clay to make a resevoir aorund where your drilling. Fill the resevoir with oil. be sure to keep oil in there otherwise you'll break the glass. If you make a little scratch with a nail where your drilling it makes it alot easier to keep the bit in the same spot.

It wouldn?t hurt to have a drill press either.
If you do it with a hand drill and your cutting angle changes, you bust the glass.
Unless it?s a spade type drill but even then it?s easy to take a bigger chunk out than you really want.

If your aquarium is the style that has metal or plastic corners (rather than the glass sides simply being glued to each other), go ahead and break one of the sides then head to your local hardware store and pickup a scrap of plexiglass.. It will either be free or less than 5 bucks. Cut the plexiglass to size, drill a hole in it, then silicone it in there. Easy and cheap.

its420's reply makes a lot of sense, just as long as the "side" you break is the Bottom. Even then, only if you replace it with THICK guage plexi--will it not bow to weight.
I've made a few plexi lids for my 10G aquarium, over time every one eventually gave in to gravity.
The bottom will be more prone to bowing because it will bear the weight of the contents of the aquarium.
Here's an idea: I have no personal experience to know if it will work, but it sounds real good. .
Cover over a bottom corner of your glass aquarium with a few pieces of masking tape inside, and then use a spring loaded nail setter (or twist the head of a teeny tiny phillips head screwdriver to leave an indent in the tape) Then follow along with the oil reservior and drill bit made for glass--as two posters have said. That should keep the bit in place, and the tape should greatly reduce the chances of breaking the glass.

Cutting a proper hole in glass is a not the easiest thing to do with out the proper equipment. It involves a relatively strait cutting angle, with low pressure on the cutting edge with a healthy supply of lubricant.
But then, I have seen guys tap a hole in a bottle with a screwdriver......

SUPPLIES: Duct Tape, Glass spade drill bit, hand drill
Put tape on both sides of glass, SLOWLY AND SOFTLY apply preasure and drill in center of tape. Worked just fine. But then a grommet was being put in, and someone was stoned, so the whole side ended up breaking, and a plexiglass side was then replaced:) The 10g aquarium was a plastic edge, glued together one.
Plexiglass is MUCH easier to drill, just build a plexiglass aquarium...use the frame from a aquarium

Ok now if you have access to a dremel high speed cutting tool that'l wrk fine i believe they may have special bits just for glas ,but ive always used the pointed abrasive types made for grinding which is how it works on glass bored out sum pretty thick bottle glass in my time with this set up ,but be WARNED that using an abrasive tool will set in motion many tiny glass particles into the air which is not some thing you want to breath sum are so small that they are classed as a gas the safest way is to do it out side with a breeze blowing away from you ,or a mask but the type that will actualy work not the cheapo types cost quit a bit of money an you wouldn want that dust floating around your habitation any way .MEW
