Removing Stuck Plastic Wide-Mouth Jar Lids
    #1521381 - 05/05/03 10:10 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

A friend of mine has a problem, he's got some jars with plastic lids that are completely stuck to his canning jars. He can't get em off no matter how hard he tries, I tried and I just ended up hurting my hands and they didn't budge.
There's no negative pressure holding them on, there's a hole in the lid.

I tried running the lids under boiling water for 30 seconds to loosen the lid, but it didn't work.
Anyone have any tips or help?

The only thing I can think of is going to get one of those 'strap wrenches' and taking it off. I just don't want to spend my money to buy something this trivial for my friend. I told him to just break the jars. He's too worried about the liquid culture of P. Djamor growing in them, since he lost his culture plate.

I suggest he just make mycellium culture syringes out of what's in the jar, but he said it's not ready yet.

What should he do?

Thanks,
-ol

Dont know if that'll work. but maybe put them in the fridge for a few hours first, and then put the lids under running hot tap water. Have you tried do grab the lid with a towel and try to screw em trough the towel ?

And last but not least : Are you turning in the right direction ?

Boiling water? Never heard of that before. Try using COLD water. Just run the water over the glass jar. Sometimes that works.

yes, I'm turning in the right direct, tried the towel trick, haven't tried the rubber dish gloves yet, gonna try that next...
This is frustrating the hell out of my friend, I just think it's funny.
His face turns all red as he tries to unscrew these things.

Cut it off with a dremel tool and a grinding disk attachment, then replace the cap.

nooo he doesn't want to cut/break the lid because it's one of the mycostarters from Micron Magick.

Any other ideas?

Take the blunt side of a very  large heavy butcher knife, or meat clever & at about a 45 degree angle, whack the plastic lid  about an inch apart all around the lid. If that doesnt loosen it, ya arent going to. Only other option is to use a very large pipe wrench to twist lid off with.

Next time use silicone pipe thread wrap around any liquid culture jar w/ plastic lid.
