jar lids

Which is best to have the lid on with the seal up or down?
And when sterilizing the jars (boiling them) should you have the lid loose or tight? I have read both and was wondering which is best. And does it speed up colonization to innoculate in 4 places instead of 1, even if you use the same amount of spore solution?
thanks for your help.

Hey, im a newbie...
All the techs ive seen say seal up is better for gas exchange;
your jars will explode without ventilation, but you prolly
have holes in the lids, so scewing tight should be o k;
If you innoc 4 places your myc. will have more places
to start from so i guess itd take less time to colonize since
its more spread out.. someone said in another post though
that this promotes uneven pinning, since each innoc.
point's mycelium would be a bit different in structure, but
im sure its cool since so many people seem to do it this
way.. =-}

Up or down...Trust me, it really doesn't matter. Start with them tight and loosen them a bit after, say, 75% colonization. 4 point innoc. definitely(Doesn't matter about the spore solution really...it only takes a few spores out of a million or so to do the trick)...

1) Inner lid upside down.
2) Loose when boiling.
3) 4 inoculation points.

Check out the lid. That red or brown ring painted around the edge is a seal that softens during the cooking. The cooling jar will create a vacuume in a jar without holes in the lid. When the jar is opened the rush of incoming air will suck in all kinds of contaminants. Upside down with a slightly loose ring, and it wont seal with a vacuume.

With the lid inverted, the jar can breathe. There is no seal. We want air passing thru our verm filter.
