Moving to Canada - Calling Shroomerites - SERIOUS!
    #3504724 -

Ok, here's the deal. A couple people from the boards, myself included, have been discussing moving into a house together in Canada - in particular somewhere around the Vancouver area of BC.

We don't have any final dates set up yet, nor do we have a very good grasp on exactly what we're doing.

Right now, I personally have plans to be contacting immigration and trying to set things up for myself in the next month. I'd like to be in Canada by the beginning / middle of spring. I will be living in Seattle for the first quarter of '05, and travelling to Canada occasionally on the weekends and trying to get a grip on the whole place.

Basically, I have a couple questions for you all:

1) Is anyone else available and/or interested in moving to Canada in '05?
2) Does anyone have any experience immigrating to Canada?
3) Does anyone have tips for the Canada-hopefuls already planning this strange and optimistic adventure?

I hope to hear from a LOT of you in this thread, and if you're interested please let me know! I'm just trying to get this monster of a project off the ground.

Dude, that is awesome of you..if i wasn't in the middle of college, I would definitely take you up on that offer, but alas, I'm stuck here for another two years.  But, I am right on the interstate to Seattle (literally, my house is 45 seconds from the interstate), about 8 hours away, so if you need a place to crash on your way out, or just want to stop and smoke a bowl, let me know. Good luck on your journeys!

Elll yeah, Adamist and I have been contemplating this idea for a while now.  We are very interested, but I can literally only speak for myself.  I wouldn't realistically be able to be there until after the National Rainbow Gathering   I love priorites!

Ares & Shroomism: I'm sure if there's a house to be got in Canada, the couple of us going could afford rent for a few months until after festival season.. then you could come up and have a house waiting for you :smile2:

Hendostan: I'll hopefully be in Seattle by the end of January. We'll have to keep in contact once it gets closer to my moving time, so we can meet up.

That sounds quite good to me too.. the main thing I'm worried about is

1) Crossing the border
2) Getting a job once across the border

Any information you can provide to alleviate my fears is appreciated

I live in Canada.

If you're planning on renting, etc... you're probably going to want to spend a bunch of time studying this site:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/

Which is the Canadian immigration site.

I have a friend who hitchhikes out to BC most summers, and he spends time working on farms and such in the valley. There are a lot of people who do this kind of thing, and he apparently has a directory of farmers who are willing to take people in. They don't all pay money, many of them will feed and house you in exchange for your work. This probably isn't a good long term option, as its seasonal.

Also, there are apparently a bunch of places that will pay you decently to help harvest marijuana crops. Doing jobs such as trimming, drying, etc... but you'll certainly need to network and make various friends to find a job like this.

If I recognize your name, and you seem like good folk, you can certainly spend a few days at my place in Toronto.

I'm not sure what kind of troubles you could run into crossing the border.. and as for getting a job once there, that's the kind of information I'd like to get from people who've done this before, or know about it.

As far as I can gather from the Canadian Immigration website, to get a work permit someone must first offer you a job. Now, I don't see how it would be possible for all citizens to get a job before entering the country, so I'm assuming it's less challenging to get a temporary residency card, then apply for jobs (in the normal manner of asking for an application, filling it out, etc), then if you get a callback, that's considered being offered a job, and you can go get your work permit. Once you've got that, you can work in Canada legally.

Someone please correct me if I'm way off. That's one of my reasons for this thread.

Crossing the border for a visit is easy. You might get searched, but that's not a problem if you don't bring things with you that you shouldn't. (Pot is cheaper, and easier to find up here in most places, you DON'T need to bring your own).

I'm not sure how things work for long stays or for moving here.

if ya got any specific questions i can try to ask.  if your lookign to rent here is one of teh bigger papers online that will help ya out.
http://www.buysell.com/class.asp?subclass=9&id=34&r=9&i=485

kelowna is beautifull but in my opinion is kinda far away from most things.  housing is risign very fast there, but it is everywhere in bc....its rising the fastest according to our local news station.

work is easyish to find depending on your experience.  what have you guys done before?  and have you got references?  you can get a job NO problem at shitty places liek mcdonalds.  also keep in mind minimum wage is $8 an hour.  so if you have 2+ people working minimum wage jobs you shoul dbe able to get by.  my sister is in downtown on her own and makes 11 somthing and gets by plus going to university.  its all about budsgeting.

zippoz, for what its worth i wouldnt come up in teh winter.  tree planting can make you tons of cash but it really sucks ass in teh winter.  ive only been once further north and my other sister has doen tons.  good pay if your able to plant lots.

also if your in vancouver cars will not be needed.  as much as people bitch about the transit (bus) it is rather good.

there is a HUGE construction boom going on so if thats your feild expect 20-25 hour unless your lucky enough to have some sort of specialty trade or luck out with a good comapny.  most anyone can get a job as a labourer which is usually 12 hour.

if any of you want me to check the newspapers for anything let me know   good luck.

Hey thanks for the tips kadakuda

I figured Kelowna would probably be kind of expensive. It looks really nice, though.

I don't really have any particular skills, and I'd just like to get a job working food service (hopefully staying away from fast food joints tho), or doing just data entry intro jobs somewhere. I don't know how the opportunities for that kinda stuff are, but it's all I'd need for a while..

And I'm pretty sure zippoz said he'd be going up next summer, not this winter.

oh, ya he did   missed that.

you shouldnt have any trouble getting those jobs.  but seriously save yourself the hassle and get your food safe certificate.  or whatever the equivelant is down there.  the other thing that helps incredibly is having your first aid cert.  you would be suprised how many employers will pick you if you have that.  its a one day course and like $80 here at the college.  small price for a fast job.

in food industry things like your thinking expect $8 an hour and tips, if your a waiter/ess.

also check that link i gave you for help wanted adds.  give you an idea.  closer to the date if your still coming up for sure pm me and i can scan some of the newspapers that arent on teh net for job lsitings if you need.  nothign sucks mroe than moving somewhere with no job ready.

Hey Johnny,
I am serious about moving in early '05. Have been doing my homework too.
I am split so far tho :/
I am inclined, especially since the career path I want to take leads  to the PNW, BC is where I see myself landing, I hope.
I am well read up about nationwide jobs and housing available.
As it is comming down, housing seems to be the biggest deal.
My Belle wants to hit Buffalo before going on. And even now, it is looking more like FL at this point  :nut:
(it is more organized than it looks, hehe)
Anyhoo, housing,
I shied away from the pnw right first off. Even tho my career route goes thata way, I don't know anybody, + must make a trip to see the place,  make an interview, hmmm.
I dunno yet, lessee where this goes.
O yeah, one more thing, the shroomerite community has a definite and permanent influence on my life decisions
:mushroom2:
:peace:
