Moving to Canada
    #1969584 -

My great grandfather died as a shit-poor immigrant coal miner. My grandfather lost his best friends as he served in WW2. For what? To make America the world's policeman? To make America an authoritarian state? How long until they decide they need another draft to fight another war in some forsaken hellhole in the middle east? I'm not dying face-down in the sand so some oil-crazy Jingoist asshole can make another buck. No child of mine will die for approval ratings.

Each time we take a collective breath in the form of non-vigilance, the 19-foot boa constrictor that is gov't control takes up the slack.

It looks like Canada is or is becoming a Libertarian Leftist state, and that sounds just fine to me. I'm getting my masters (organic chem and environmental science) and getting the fuck out of here. I don't mind the cold at all. Canadian whisky is good stuff (Anyone in the Canadian Club?), and I have no problem with maple anything.

Anyone with me on this one?

i've been considering that for a while. i'd like to get out of here before any shit goes down with North Korea or Iran or Syria. the terrorist threat is much realer then most people think, smallpox could easily kill tens of thousands in the US. a lot of stuff from russia is missing, including briefcase size nukes and bio-weapons. and i live right next to DC :

somebody told me before though that you need about 10,000 in your bank account to move there... dunno if this is true or not.

only thing about canada is its too damn cold! has anybody ever considered costa rica, the virgin islands or anywhere south? i havent looked into it but wouldnt mind living on some island near the equator. i'd like to have my ganja crop and just live

If you feel you would be better off in Canada, by all means check it out.

My story is the reverse -- I left Canada almost sixteen years ago because I got fed up with the government poking its nose into every corner of my life and charging me an outrageous amount of money to do so.

When you say it looks like Canada is a Libertarian Leftist state, you are half right. It is definitely Leftist. Sadly, there is no Libertarian aspect to it that I was ever able to discover. Weed may eventually become decriminalized, but that's about it.

The maple syrup is definitely world class and the seal clubbers are actually pretty nice guys once you get to know them, but if you think Canadian Club is a good whiskey, you'll be delighted once you get the chance to check out other Canadian whiskeys. Canadian Club is the worst Canadian whiskey I have ever tried. Check out Adam's Antique or even better, Crown Royal.

Good luck on your voyage.

Not to change the topic, but I believe Alaska courts just ruled that its ok to have up to 4 ounces of pot in your home. Plus, it is on the west coast, and close to canada for trips to there and such. Just an idea for Americans who don't have money, or a great job to get into canada. :nut:

Right now, there's a bottle of Glen Kinchie single-malt scotch in the fridge. I'm actually itching to try some Crown Royal. My buddy's dad is a big fan, judging by the Crown Royal barbeque apron he's got. Just signs of how 30-years-out-of-phase my tastes are. I love good cigars (You can get Cubans in canada) good beer (I prefer Guinness or Sam Adams, but Labatts will do), and good whiskey.

Alaska might be nice. Not paying income tax, at all. Getting MONEY from the gov't for the oil being taken. Legal pot. And I bet the next hijacked airliner is NOT coming down on Anchorage.

Warmer.... what about Ireland? At least there, terrorism is at least about a cause I believe in. Not exactly the Libertarian Left state I'm looking for, but at least ancestrally it's home.

Did we ever affirm or disprove the idea that you had to have a lot of money to move there? It doesn't make sense to me, it's human nature to survive and getting there wouldn't be that difficult so what would the money be needed for?

But really, you moved away 16 years ago man! SO much has changed!

Running an elections poll today, I got to see the KIND OF PEOPLE who are voting MOST in Canada (or at the very least in my area, but I think it's much the same elsewhere).

Well over half the voters I saw were between the ages of 18 and 30.

Not sure what that has to do with anything...but I think Canada's youth is in a GREAT position these days going into the future.

Really pinkshark, things have changed

Labatt's isn't that great, it's all a bunch of watery lagers, really, but there's plenty of good Canadian beers as well.

Yeah? Like what?

I live in the Dominican Republic now, but I am in Canada twice every year for about four weeks each time to visit my parents. They live in Ottawa. As well, a significant percentage of the tourists here are Canadian, as is a very large percentage of the expatriate community -- usually surfers and windsurfers who stay from six months to a few years, or who spend the winter here and the summers in Canada. I spend a lot of time talking to them.

When I am in Canada I carefully read at least one newspaper (often two) pretty much cover to cover (except the sports section) every single day. I watch television as well. I do a heck of a lot of shopping in all kinds of stores (resupplying stuff that is hard to find here). I talk to my parents and old friends and ex-co-workers.

The only changes I have noticed is that the socialized medicine is even worse than it was when I left, there are even more government regulations, taxes are even higher, and the dollar is worth less. Oh, and since the Grand Banks cod have more or less gone the way of the Dodo, unemployment in the Maritime Provinces is even higher than it was sixteen years ago (hard as that is to believe).

About the only positive changes I can see is that the Quebec separation dealie appears to be on the back burner (for now), and it looks as if eventually weed may be decriminalized. Otherwise, there is less to recommend Canada than there was sixteen years ago.

Hey, if you are happy living there, more power to you. I had few complaints when I was your age either. The only reason I threw in my two cents was Kid Orgo's beef against the "authoritarian state" and the "the 19-foot boa constrictor that is gov't control". If he thinks 19-foot boa constrictors are a pain in the ass, I doubt he'll appreciate 29-foot ones.

As for Canada and Libertarian principles....

BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA !!

Well we have problems, but I think we're headed in the right direction. At least as a society.

As I see it, the Canadian people are increasingly becoming separated from the Canadian Government. In many cases it looks like we just do whatever we want, and we let them (the gov) do whatever they want.

As such, I would not judge our country by our government. I would judge it by the people.

1) I want to smoke my weed.

3) I don't feel like paying 1/3 of my check to fund some bloated bureaucracy

4) And if the government would refrain from killing people in my name, that would be good, too.

Great..thanks.
So basically I just have to live there for 3 years. I haven't been in jail or been involved in any war crimes..so I should be good.

This argument about how Canada is this and that... when you compare Canada to the US, Canada is the nicest place in the world. I've lived right outside of Washington DC for my whole life. I have been raped by my own government on more than occassion. I'm sick of paying a government I don't support, 1/3 of my income, and not even having health insurance, or dental insurance. I'm sick of being harrased and searched by police because I have long hair, or "look" like a criminal. I'm sick of working my ass off everyday, and not having a fucking thing to show for it. I'm sick of being fed bullshit propoganda by ignorant, uneducated, self-righteous fuckholes. I'm sick of the fact that wherever I go, I am watched by video cameras on every corner.. I'm sick of the ignorant brainwashed zombie consumers that surround me. I'm sick of the bullshit they put on TV. I'm sick of watching the fat cats in washington sitting on golden thrones encrusted with diamonds, eating their roast mutton, debating on how much of a pay increase they should get, while people a block down rot away in some street corner in the cold with no food. I'm fucking sick of this country, and I want out. And I sure as hell am not going to war for my bullshit government and George Bush's power trip with his little cock. For these reasons and so much more, I'm getting the hell out of here.

I'm serious about this.. I want to move to Toronto. This is something I've been thinking about for a long time, and I think that it is time. Though I think with winter coming up I would freeze my ass off.. that should give me a good 6 months to prepare.

Canada... here comes Shroomism!

To all those poeple who complain about the higher taxes we pay here in Canada:

At least the extra money isn't going to fund a massive military. I think we have a standing army of 60k, maybe a little more or less. Personally I feel good knowing that I'm paying for other people's health and such. They're paying for mine, as well.

I was in the hospital the other night. I had blood tests done, ultrasound, and a couple x-rays. Plus a 12-hour stay. I didn't pay a cent.

Yes our healthcare system needs work...but at least we ADMIT it needs work and we try to do something about it.

I would gladly pay higher taxes knowing that they were going ANYWHERE but military.

in canada you'll pay far more than 1/3 of your gross in income tax - it can be as high as 60% for upper-income brackets if you don't deduct every fucking thing you can. which is why many doctors, lawyers, and dentists move to the states, they get faaar richer.

other than that, canada is pretty great. west coast BC all the way, baby. the damn yankee RAVE Act won't effect us electronic music junkies here either, which is nice.

The problem is, you can only do whatever you want until whatever you want to do runs up against what the government says you can't do. All I point out is that you run up against that wall sooner in Canada than you do in the US.

As such, I would not judge our country by our government. I would judge it by the people.

Nope.

However, there are countries (such as the one where I live) where the government is so lackadaisacal and/or incompetent that (unlike Canada) it is pretty easy to avoid them. For example, I've paid exactly zero in income taxes in my almost sixteen years of living here. Here, the government does nothing for me, but they ask nothing of me either.

You don't want to smoke dope openly here, though.

Canada is fortunate in that if things come to a crunch, the protection received from the most powerful military machine on the planet will come at zero cost to Canadian taxpayers.

Personally I feel good knowing that I'm paying for other people's health and such. They're paying for mine, as well.

Here's a novel idea -- why not have the option of paying for your own? But you'll have to move from Canada.

I was in the hospital the other night. I had blood tests done, ultrasound, and a couple x-rays. Plus a 12-hour stay. I didn't pay a cent.

Yeah you did. You just didn't pay it at a desk in the hospital. You paid far more for those tests than you would have in the US -- and WAAAAAYYYYY more than you would have paid here in the Dominican Republic.

You might want to take a look at some of those studies the government is commissioning every few years to investigate (yet again) the Canadian health care crisis. You'll be shocked to see what your share of the bill comes to.

Yes our healthcare system needs work...but at least we ADMIT it needs work and we try to do something about it.

The only thing that ever gets done about it is --

1) Yet more studies and panels and commissions

2) More money thrown at it (need I tell you where the money comes from?)

Here's an example:

Work 40 hours a week, couldn't afford health insurance
They took 1/3 of my income
I got food poisoning one day and went to the emergency room
They stuck an I.V in me and pumped me with saline (salt water) for 2 hours.
I got the bill - $900

Right now my taxes go to the military and social security which I will never see. I'd gladly pay higher taxes for free healthcare. The cheapest healthcare through my job was $50 a month, and I simply couldn't afford it after taxes and all my bills.

Depends how you define "nice".

I have been raped by my own government on more than occassion.

When I still lived in Canada, I was raped by my own government on more than one occasion.

I'm sick of paying a government I don't support, 1/3 of my income, and not even having health insurance, or dental insurance.

I paid a government I didn't support way more than a 1/3 of my income, to get health care of such low quality it would probably be illegal in the US if an insurance company offered it. No dental, either, by the way.

I'm sick of being harrased and searched by police because I have long hair, or "look" like a criminal.

Happened to me more than once in Canada, too -- even after I had cut my hair.

I'm sick of working my ass off everyday, and not having a fucking thing to show for it.

Then for sure you won't like Canada any better. Wages are higher in the US, prices are lower, taxes are lower. I can guarantee (presuming you do the same job) you won't have a fucking thing to show for it in Canada either.

I'm sick of being fed bullshit propoganda by ignorant, uneducated, self-righteous fuckholes.

Then you won't care much for Canadian TV or Canadian newspapers either, I'm afraid.

I'm sick of the fact that wherever I go, I am watched by video cameras on every corner.

Hmmm. As far as I know, apart from cameras for speed traps, Canada still only has video cameras inside buildings, not on every street corner. But I must admit I don't go looking for them, so maybe I'm wrong.

I'm sick of the ignorant brainwashed zombie consumers that surround me.

Canadians buy the same consumer goods Americans do. Just not as much, cuz they're poorer.

I'm sick of the bullshit they put on TV.

See my prior comments re Canadian TV.

I'm sick of watching the fat cats in washington sitting on golden thrones encrusted with diamonds, eating their roast mutton, debating on how much of a pay increase they should get, while people a block down rot away in some street corner in the cold with no food.

LOL. You won't be too impressed with "King Chretien" and his cronies, then.

I'm fucking sick of this country, and I want out.

Pinksharkmark in late 1987 -- "I'm fucking sick of this country, and I want out!"

Despite what many people like to think, there is really little substantive difference between living in America and living in Canada. Americans have more freedom, they make more money, and get to keep a lot more of what they make, but apart from that (and the weather) there is just not that big a difference.

But that is something you'll have to discover for yourself. Good luck on your move.

The problem is, you can only do whatever you want until whatever you want to do runs up against what the government says you can't do. All I point out is that you run up against that wall sooner in Canada than you do in the US.

No, see I really don't think that's the case. I don't know a lot of people who won't do something just because it's illegal. I don't mean that people go around breaking every law they can, but that the reason people don't do certain things here is more because it's what we feel is right and not because of what the government is telling us to do.

I think we let "them" do what they want, and we go and do what we want anyway.

Your tax burden and payroll deductions to cover Canada's socialized healthcare will come to more than $600.00 a year. Far more.

The big difference I think in our views of Canada is that you seem to like and enjoy money, while I don't care for it much at all.

I don't want to be rich. The government takes about 1/7 to 1/5 of my paycheque. I don't make that much, granted, but I like it that way and I don't have to work very hard for what I do get. If I wanted to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year...I would move to the US.

Losing 1/7th of my paycheque to be guaranteed access to health care, whether I'm working and paying taxes or unemployed, is perfectly fine for me.

Maybe it's not for everyone, that's fine. Don't move to Canada if you don't want to pay like this.

But personally, I'm fine with it. I'd gladly give even 1/3 of my paycheque (well if wages were higher, otherwise I couldn't survive on what I make) to know that my fellow citizens and human beings are getting the SAME health care that I am, no matter how much or little money they have. I do not believe that money, of all things, should determine the level and ammount of medical care a person gets.

And again, yes our system needs work...but I think the fact that we have such a large and universally accessible public health system is a huge starting point.

Didn't you read about my 2 hour trip to the emergency room? $900 for a couple pints of water. I should have gone to the hospital about seven other times that year, but I didn't cause I was broke. I'll happily pay far more than 600 a year for healthcare if it means free trips to the hospital.

Actually, I like and enjoy freedom. There is less of that in Canada than there is in the US.

If you add in the GST and PST charged on virtually everything you buy, you will find that far more than 20% of your annual income goes to the government. Here's an experiment that will shock you -- for one month, keep every receipt for everything you buy. At the end of the month, add up the amount of GST and PST. Add that to your payroll deductions, then run your percentage calculation again.

If you intend to have a family someday, or buy a house rather than pouring rent money down the drain for the next 50 or 60 years, or even simply provide for your own retirement, you will find that working a job where the taxes are that low just won't cut it. You can do it for a few years when you're young no problem. As a lifetime strategy, it's not the best -- unless you don't mind working 40 hours a week at age eighty.

Yeah, I read it. How many hospital staff spent time with you? How many tests were run before they decided it was just food poisoning and all you needed was rehydration?

I should have gone to the hospital about seven other times that year, but I didn't cause I was broke.

New information. I didn't know you had a medical condition that required hospitalization eight times a year. However, it must be pointed out that even though you didn't go, you are still with us.

I'll happily pay far more than 600 a year for healthcare if it means free trips to the hospital.

How much more? Would you pay four times that, for example? What is your cost per hospital trip if you buy the $50 a month insurance you mentioned earlier?

They didn't run any tests to my knowledge, just asked me a bunch of questions and hooked up to an IV. I saw two people..the nurse, and a doctor.

I don't have any medical condition, that was just a bad year for me medically, had a lot of accidents that I should have gone to the hospital for but didn't. I ended up healing myself.

Are you saying the US is easier to live in than Canada? What about the decriminilization of marijuana? I'd go just for that..but the people, and the healthcare are two of the other things high on my list.

GST and PST put together are a 15% tax.

Say I'm being charged about %15 off my pay. Not all of that goes to income tax, either. Some goes to Employment Insurance (I was just layed off and now qualify for some "free" money :smirk: ).

So yeah, 30% of my income is going to the the government.

So what? I'm fine with that. The services I get as a Canadian citizen, and which my taxes pay for, FAR outweigh the shitty deal of having 30% of my income "taken away" from me.

I've seen the roads in the US...they are mostly shit compared to most here. My taxes pay for that.

I have 24/7 access to any health care I should need. Yes sometimes there are waiting lines. Yes, in some places money can by "better" care. Well I don't have that money, nor would I likely have it even if I wasn't being taxed HALF as much.

And no, I don't plan on working as a line cook my whole life. That's silly

I would not give up these rights that I have as a Canadian citizen just so I'd have some more money to spend on worthless shit.

I know a lot of Americans who are starting to argue differently...

And it certainly doesn't look like this to me. What freedoms do they have in the US that I don't have?

And don't say something silly like "less taxes". I've already told you I don't care about the tax here.  :smirk:

Werd, I have lived all over Western Canada, and made my current home in Vancouver, B.C. Its all here, from skateboarding to snowboarding all within a half an hour. Barely snows in the city. A little to conservative fer my liking, but its also a center fer yer left wing liberal people. We have Marc Emmery here afterall, he went across Canada smoking out cities and being arrested fer his cause. Thanks Marc, for standing you ground. Metal scene here is okay, fer as much as I know, I'm more of a techno head myself. Clean air, sexy women, and lots of beaches. The city seems to run off of superficail bullshit sometimes, you just gotta steer clear of it. I can do anything and not really be paranoid.(knock on wood). I really feel for the american that can't have any say in the way their government is being run. Seems like you can buy the presidency there. I am furious of the American policy, but, it will come and bite them government officials in the ass soon enuff. The Vancouver Islands are where all the draft dodgers came to hide out. KNoiw them basterds gorw some of the most bad ass buds out there. Anyway, hope this helps. Vancouver has been the best place yet fer me. But I do want my own island, or my own farm on an island somewhere around here.

Peace Brutha's and Sisters,
