    #3471874 - 12/09/04 07:15 PM (12 years, 2 days ago)

Can someone post a link or the tek itself for the casing that uses brf and verm? I have two cakes ready to go that i want to cse in an 8X11 in pyro container. THanks in advance. Oh ps teh cakes have been done about 2 days is that time enough to break them up?

Does a day 1/2 of full colonization mean i can break it up and case it? OR is that to soon?

Also how do you sterilize your casing layers?

U don't use brf in the casing layer... you don't want nutrients in it.

I used a 50/50 verm/peat casing layer , sterilized in the microwave in a microwavable dish w/lid , moisten the mix too.

and I would wait 4-7 days after the exterior has fully colonized (the cake)

peace

You could use a foil pan with a cover in the oven... needs to be moist though...

a cover should stop most of the water vapour from escaping... maybe add a little more water to be safe...

i read on a casing tek that you could put the casing subtrate in a pillow case or whatnot, and boil it for an 1-2 hours.
is that correct? maybe there's a better way?

I'd say 350 deg for at least one hour in oven just to be safe..

as long as it's moist and covered... you should be cool

those glass casserole dishes with lids are good.. or just foil covered tin loaf pans

cool, thx a lot man.

but let me make sure i got this correctly...
i mix the subtrate(verm and peat moss), put it in a foil pan of some sort, cover it with foil. and put it in the oven??

seems simple enough.

A good way to determine the correct moisture is to squeeze a handful of casing layer in your hand. When you squeeze it, not very hard, a few drops of water should drip out.

And a little bit of each (oys. shells/lime) not too much though,

good luck!

Theres no reason to pasteurize casing material instead of sterilizing it. There are no good things in the casing layer..thats the only reason you pasteurize straw and poo to keep the good organisms alive. Casing can be sterilized or pasteurized..no difference.
