Nothing, my friends, its worse than seeing a good band gone bad. What are some bands that have surprised YOU by selling out is my question. Right now i can think of:
-Offspring. Smash was sooo awesome. But whats with this pretty fly for a white guy shit. so sad.
-Salt n peppa. come on sistas! whats with that beatles cover you did?
-Aerosmith. ok so i'm sure many think they still kick ass but the fact that they have liv tyler write all their music doesn't please me.
-bon jovi. ok the times have changed..wait he always sucked nevermind
i can't think of anymore right now, i'm sure more will dawn on me later

I would definitely have to say U2 for starters. To me, they were always a band that was good at making a few 'really great' songs on album, and the rest being filler...with Achtung Baby, they started getting more experimental, and thinking of an album as a whole piece. I know many people probably disagree but the Passengers album they did with Eno and Pop (ignore Discoteque) were masterpieces. I still like to pull out Pop every once in a while when tripping because they did something completely different with the sounds and beats they used (listen to 'Miami' - trust me). Definitely an art record.
But their newest album (All That You Can't Leave Behind or whatever) is just a throwback to Achtung Baby. It was like because Pop didn't sell well, they had to go back to the money-making machine. I read recently that Bono had told Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) that "U2 are re-applying for the job of greatest rock band in the world". Fuck that.
Another I'd like to mention is Marilyn Manson (and yes I'm sure most people here probably despise manson). Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals were pretty deep and were very emotive. Antichrist especially was a great art-rock record. Some of the effects and sounds they used on both of those albums still bring chills down my spine every once in a while. But Mechanical Animals didn't sell very well because it wasn't as heavy and didn't fit with the Manson 'image', so they made Holy Wood (described by Manson himself as a cross between Animals and Antichrist), to get the teenage crowd buying their records and thinking they're relevant again and 'still a heavy band'. Holy Wood does have a few gems on it, but as a whole the album smells like toe fungus. I mean, they did Beautiful People again with Disposable Teens and The Fight Song is a blatant rip-off of Blur's Song 2.
And the last I would like to mention is Pearl Jam, who never really sold out, but they gave themselves in to everything Anti and limited themselves to soft-punk songs and grunge ballads (sorry i hate the word grunge as the next person, but i couldn't think of anything else). Anti-CD (for a long time they claimed that Vinyl was best and released all of their albums on Vinyl before on CD), Anti-Video, Anti-Radio, Anti-Promotion, Anti-Effects, Anti-Synthesizers. Don't get me wrong, I used to be a HUGE fan of Pearl Jam, but they sold themselves out to the idea that all you have to do is play guitar, bass and drums and make any sort of song you feel like. I loved Vs. and Vitalogy, and No Code was a step in the right direction in terms of being more experimental and trying to find growth, but as a whole Yield and Binaural are jokes, and are evidence that they should have given up while they were ahead. And come on, them releasing all of those damn 'bootleg' CDs, is an obvious try at making up the money they lost in the past by being so Anti.
ciao

I can understad why you think the offspring are selling out, but i really don't think they are, now i am a bit bias because there are one of my favorite bands (i try to see them every chance i get, 4 times so far, but they fucked my on their last tour, cancelled their date 1 DAY before they were gonna play), as far as Pretty Fly for a White Guy, Original Prankster goes, i personally like just about every tune they put out, but the funny part about those 2 songs is that they are essentially a remake of Come Out and Play. The first song that gets released from a new album from the offspring is a 3 min. song with a catchy tune, beat,(dare i say poppy), that gets major radio time, so all the teenie boppers/"fly white guys" rush out to buy the album (thinking that the whole cd is similar to that song), this is merely a ploy to sell more records, i don't think that is selling out because their just tricking the simple minds(herds) into buying their album, true most would just listen to the 1 song over and over for a few weeks and grow tired of the album but some would probably listen to it and actually like the other songs. A few more points: The Offspring gave away 1,000,000$ of their own money to a fan, they signed with Sony over Epitaph for less money to retain complete controll over their music. If you liked Smash, listen to some of their earlier stuff, Ignition, or their first album, The Offspring, and yes there is alot more to their albums then Pretty Fly or Original Prankster(there may actually be some punk in there), but those 2 songs are hilarious!! Just one Offsprings fan opinion!!!!

There is no bigger group of sellouts thatn KoRn, I know it's not a suprise, but it seemed pretty sudden, the first two albums were void of any scent of selling out, but then Follow The Leader came out (ironic title), and that summer everyone was a *huge* KoRn fan. THEN Issues came out and all of a sudden there's shit like "Do you have Issues?" obviously refering to the album, but then it was also obviously refering to mental problems which made kid's think it was cool to be insane. Plus they sold "somebody Someone" to Puma damn sellouts.
Yeah, Metallica soldout, they were good though, and c'mon, could you honestly say that if you were an aging metal band, you wouldn't do the same.
