This is Jakob - Solace. Hope you enjoy it Middleman.
Instrumental bliss from across the Tasman

If you managed to drag yourself out of the house a few months ago to catch Sydney based heavy rockers Cog on their cross-country jaunt in October, then you will have doubt managed caught New Zealand (Napier) based instrumental act Jakob in support. If on the other hand you missed out on Jakob’s incredible performances, all I can say is that you missed out big time, as Solace only compounds the fact. Having already released two highly respected albums (2001’s Subsets Of Sets and 2003’s Cale:Drew), it’s been a long wait for Jakob (Who comprise of guitarist Jeff Boyle, bassist Maurice Beckett and drummer Jason Johnston) to return with something new, but the wait has been more than worth it.

The gentle and rhythmic Malachite is a slow building introduction to the album that sees the trio build up toward an explosive tail end, all the while maintaining a sense of hypnotic groove with a distinct and memorable catchiness. The predominately bass driven Pneumonic is far heavier initially (Enhanced with some sampling from H. Walker), but gives way around the middle to allow the guitars to add some atmospheric tones, only to find the trio turn things up towards the crushing finale. Lonesome is one of the more reflective numbers on the album in which the guitars are used for subtle (And at times eerie) tones rather than for anything resembling a riff (Which is aided by producer Dave Holmes, who puts in a guest performance on guitar), while the up-tempo Oran Mor chops and changes from moody lulls to raging feedback.

The single (And first promotional video clip filmed from the album) Safety In Numbers is similar in nature to the album’s opening cut with it’s ever ascending build on layers of sound, while the epic Everything All Of The Time (Featuring HDU’s Tristan Dingemans on guitar and vocals) and the melancholy/delicate Saint are rich tapestries in sound movement, and stand out as the album’s strongest moments.

Describing Jakob is no easy task, but if you were to combine elements of Jesu, Pelican, Isis and Neurosis together into an instrumental form, you’ll know just how special Jakob really is, and how utterly essential Solace is to your collection.

Currently uploading these albums:

Dysrhythmia - Barriers and Passages
Pelican - Australasia
Envy - Insomniac Doze
Agalloch - The Mantle
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - f#a#OO

Check back later.

I wouldn't worry about the RIAA with these bands. I'm sure the RIAA doesn't even know most of these bands exists.

FUCK the RIAA! But the fact that they aren't worried about these bands means we should support them by buying their CDs.

These guys work hard and spend a ton of dough to bestow upon us the Rock,
if we want them to continue we should pay them for their work, just like any other service.

At least buy a shirt when at the show...

I definitely still buy albums, especially when the band plays a show down here. Trouble is in the stores they usually charge import prices so I can't always afford to buy the albums.
But when they tour down here, I definitely make the effort to go along.

Sorry it took so long; my internet was being unbearably slow yesterday. Here's one of the five albums.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/4vvhyc

This is Agalloch - The Mantle.
It was a cold and unpleasant afternoon as I left the used CD store. The sky was grey and I prepared myself for the journey home. As I put on my hat and opened the door to leave the store, I turned on my CD player and zipped up my coat. Although I was feeling eager to get home, and out from the cold, something strange happened at that moment. As the music began flowing through my headphones, and the opening chords immediately surrounded me in their dark, melancholy atmosphere, I was suddenly overwhelmed with an urge to go for a long walk. As I reached into my coat and increased the volume, I began observing the people around me as they went along with their daily comings and goings. As I continued on my march, still observing the life that surrounded me, the sombre mood of the music continued to accompany me along my way. The sky remained bleak, and the air cold as the afternoon wore on...

If you can create a mental image of the scene that I have just described, then you already have I clear idea of what AGALLOCH's newest release "The Mantle" sounds like. Having read many positive reviews regarding this group from the bleak landscapes of Oregon, I was very curious to hear them for myself. While I had heard a few songs prior to purchasing this release, nothing could quite prepare me for the dark, depressive nature of AGALLOCH's music. The inescapable atmosphere of this collection of songs is truly breathtaking. The emphasis on acoustics contribute greatly to this emotional masterwork. Though the songs remain in the slow, to mid-tempo range, it never becomes a problem, as fast drumming and sweeping riffs would seem out of place on "The Mantle". While the use of repetition throughout this album may be seen as boring, I feel that it helps to add to the overall sense of longing and foreboding expressed by the musicians. Like a flowing river, each track joins together seamlessly, giving the listener a true sense of appreciation for "The Mantle"'s complete nature. While all songs work together to make this album the achievement that it is, look no further than the fourteen minute epic "In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion" to truly experience AGALLOCH's greatness. While Metalheads looking for a place to bang their heads may be turned away by AGALLOCH's calmness, this album will easily appeal to any looking for an original, yet challenging musical experience that will reveal its beauty over time. AGALLOCH have managed to create an album worthy of the attention of any music fan, which is why "The Mantle" deserves to be perceived as a great musical achievement.

...As I finally reached the end of my street, the final awe-inspiring note resounded from my CD player, only to be replaced by silence. In awe, I attempted to grasp what I had just experienced, but failed to successfully do so. My journey had come to its end as I entered my house, feeling welcomed by its warmth. The air was still cold, and the sky still grey as I took one final look outside. Emotionally drained, I shut the door.

This is Dysrhythmia - Barriers And Passages
Prog rock is dangerous terrain. Step one way, and you fall into the wretched excess of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. A misstep another way leads to the interminably turgid Dream Theater. Abandon all hope (of meeting girls), ye who listen to Yes! The problem with prog is self-indulgence; the genre brings to mind guys with ponytails who sit around and praise Rush for its "musicianship." But now that bands like The Mars Volta (and in the past, Built to Spill) has made prog less unhip, Dysrhythmia should find fans outside the usual long-haired circles.

This instrumental trio has what most prog doesn't: restraint. No note is out of place, and the group eschews "jamming" in favor of tight but adventurous composition. Bassist Colin Marston and guitarist Kevin Hufnagel are virtuosos; Marston moonlights in avant-prog metal band Behold…the Arctopus, while Hufnagel is trained in jazz and classical guitar. But despite its technical bent, the group knows how to groove, and concisely conveys its chops without sounding studied.

After two self-released recordings, including the phenomenal No Interference, the band signed to grind/death metal label Relapse Records. The pairing might seem odd, but the band's chops match or exceed those of anyone on the label. In 2003, Dysrhythmia recorded Pretest with Steve Albini, who captured the band with his signature "live in the room" sound. Albini was a good choice; he recorded The Jesus Lizard's best albums, and at times Dysrhythmia sounds like The Jesus Lizard playing instrumental surf rock filtered through the prog metal of Atheist and Cynic.

On Barriers and Passages, Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Dresden Dolls, Helmet) is behind the boards. His work is so stellar that the album's promotional sticker hypes his role as engineer. Albini brought out Marston's huge, distorted bass tone and Jeff Eber's tough, yet supple drumming (again, think of The Jesus Lizard's rhythm section), but Bisi adds more clarity and detail. A notable difference from Pretest is the greater use of overdubs. They don’t often happen, as Hufnagel's playing is so full-bodied that he already sounds like more than one guitarist. But when they do, overdubs allow sustained melodies to soar over staccato, Duane Denison-esque chords on "Seal/Breaker/Void," and crystalline harmonics to chime over the wall of noise that ends "Sleep Decayer."

That song is noteworthy, both for its twitchy double-time and growling half-time passages, and for its technical prowess. Three minutes in, Hufnagel plays what sounds like a drone, but what is actually a single note picked repeatedly. He continues for two and a half minutes, picking sixteenth notes until the end of the song. That's endurance.

Hufnagel's basic tone is twangy (imagine Dick Dale, but tougher), but he liberally dials in both clean tones and muscular distortion, resulting in the band's most diverse album yet. While Dysrhythmia's music is challenging, close inspection reveals kindred spirits; Touch and Go, classic Dischord (the band has covered Fugazi live), Joe Satriani (minus the populist tendencies), Trenchmouth, The Mermen, and Mastodon all inhabit the same constellation of controlled dissonance.

You mean Irepress? We have similar tastes, they're among my favorite mentioned so far.
Lots of killer 5/4 + 7/4, they're like a heavier, more modern, and instrumental King Crimson.

Love all the instrumental stuff, great soundtracks for The Cosmic Trigger series I'm reading.
