...for 311 at the Shroomery? These guys put out a unique style, great percussion/beats by Chad Sexton on drums, sick guitar solos, and they are absolute lyrical geniuses.

So where are the people here that are "down with the UNITY! unanimity of the unity!:bong:

I like em...I feel like they get their style directly from Sublime, Sublime is one of my favorite bands. I should get a 311 album and listen to some more of thier music, what I've heard of it I liked.

All my friends listened to them for years before I did. I was very hesistant about getting into them because of all the rap. But now, after a slow and steady integration, I love them. I even love their rap now. I do believe they are musical geniuses. Their live performances are uncanny.

And whether or not one wants to say their lyrics are "genius" is debatable, but one thing is NOT debatable: their lyrics put out very positive and uplifting messages in a package that can be digested by a lot of different crowds. That alone makes them worth more than their weight in gold in my book.

I have much love for Nick Hexum and Tim Mahoney. Oh, and P-Nut and Chad Sexton are also fucking amazing. S.A. does what he does very well, although I consider his role to be the least demanding. (His harmonies rock, though!)

Their style is similar to Sublime in some ways, (basically just the reggae influence...) but it's a far cry from being "directly from" Sublime.

More likely is that they were both influenced by a similar background of other earlier artists.

I highly recommend Transistor and Grassroots if you decide to pick up some CDs...

The song "Amber" was very special to me on my first roll.

I saw them almost a year ago and they sound great live. I enjoy their music, they just aren't a group I listen to a whole bunch.

What makes a sell-out in your book? Just curious... I completely disagree that they sold out. If anything, I'd say they keep on rolling with their own style and that makes them anything but sell outs.

And they cover artists they respect, just like any band. They've also covered Van Halen and The Clash amongst others. Sounds like you're just irate because they got a lot of air play with the Cure cover. (And I think it's an excellent cover, btw... a lot better than the Cure version.)

i don't consider an artist a sellout until there music becomes more simplified and they write for the reason of appeasing their fans. when true musical artists start, they aren't aware of the audience, and the best written material is that which is made before the audience shows its face. then, there are other reasons to write the music for the artist, and the music becomes less personal and more suitable for the tastes of the fans. they write what they think people want to here. it's predetermind i believe, being a writer myself. i was performing some a few months back, stopped because i hatted what my writing was becoming. it's a lot better when i'm slap down depressed in my basement or apartment writing to pass these endless days.

any band, solo artist you look at, the music they wrote before they gained an audience is usually more personal and is usually written more intrinsicaly. when the audience makes their appearance, and the writer(s) write with them in mind, that is when they merge into 'sell outs'. when the writer is not writing for only himself, he is merging to become a sellout.

nothing to do with $$ necesarily, that's where the 'sell out' logo may be minconstrued, but money comes along with success and the fans, so it's in the cycle to become a sell out.

Put simply: I think it's very presumptuous of you to assume you know the reason anyone besides you writes anything.

But you are still entitled to your opinion, so I will leave it at that.
