^ Anyone hearing this? Kind of disappointing, imo. What's with Barresi and taking bands 'back to their roots'?

It's not bad. I didn't have any high expectations. It will take numerous listens to grow an appreciation for the album though which is a good thing. I definitely dig the instrumentals.

Virus - The Black Flux
Virus is a Norwegian avant-garde jazz rock band formed in 2000 by Carl-Michael Eide. The band is considered as a continuation of his previous band Ved Buens Ende because of similar musical elements and an avant garde form of unusual experimentation, although the band has its own unique characteristic sound. My friend described this band as: "If the most evil black metal guys of today formed a jazz swing band in the 60s, that's what Virus sounds like - Harmonic Dissonance." I can't get enough of these guys.

It's half post-rock not prog. I agree post rock can get a little boring if one doesn't have a GF. Some of the sludge metal acts are far more 'Avant-garde' than all the jazz metal bands, imo.

Virus is neat. I have their first album, Carheart. Didn't realise they released another album, being as it's been nearly 5 years since the release of Carheart.

I've found some cool things to try out here.
The trick is for something to be both avant-garde, and yet very "metal," like Voivod, Atheist, Gorguts, etc.
I didn't know Shroomism was a metal head.
