    #3447697 - 12/04/04 09:18 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

you havent checked the website out hard enough. If you're doing PF tek, you dont need a pressure cooker. You may boil your jars.

PF cakes you can live without PC. Grains, millet, WBS -- you cannot.

If you ever do decide to get a PC.

Buy an All American, the bigger the better.

You will never regret doing so.

Here is the perfect thing you need:

http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=CANN02

That is what you should use if you dont want to by a PC. Before you buy that one, check out some of those big chain store that take over small towns (ie, walmart, target, kmart). They will probably have them, and you wont have to pay shipping.  It's called a: Canning Pot . They work perfect for Brown Rice Flour.

well if u dont want to buy a pressure cooker,
get a proper autoclave

nah just joking, if u go grains, the only way will be a pressure cooker,
sorry mate.

the thing in the link above u could use to do some pf jars i guess,
but id also suggest sterilizing these.

by the way, whats a 50$ investemtn over a long term?

What he said. I have been examining this tek carefully. I want to get a good idea of what xactly boiling is to achieve. I want my first one to go right :x:

QUESTION: On a canner such as the one above, do y'all think that it holds a little bit of pressure, though it is not necessary for steam penetration in canning.
But to use it in pf tek, say maybe even 2 or 3 # can be achieved.?.
It's tried and proven, so, it works.
Peter's gonna tell ya to put a brick on top of it  He no's about these things

Also, you must, at least to some degree, achieve steam penetration, but avoid condensation at this point. It could destroy your water content.
Is this right?

well u dont really have to worry about ur water content getting screwed much when
u pressure cook jars, they stay allright usually.

anyway, u are right that up to some point, one can use boiling water pots
in order to kill germs on the pftek jars, i wouldnt call that sterilizing though.

anyways, i just know this from what i read about other growers procedure,
id always suggest du to buy a pressure cooker, again, 50$ investment ist that much!

If you don't have a pressure cooker, then do PF tek.

No. It's just a big cooking pot with a lightweight metal lid and no seal. Max temperature is 212F.

Again, no. Your jars should weigh the same before and after being pressure cooked or boiled. There's no need for steam to touch the substrate.

If you are going to boil, make a few extra jars. Then it's no big deal to lose a few. Also, I'd let the prepared jars sit wet for a day before boiling. That lets some of the temperature resistant endospores germinate, after which the heat will croak them.

Good tip, ty

And again, isn't it the steam penetrating the substrate that kills the contams?

:peace:

You can do grain without a pressure cooker using fractional sterilization. This might be successful but not as much as a PC.

I know there is some info in the faqs for details.

Basically, you let soak your grain for some time, boil em and repeat these two steps 2 or 3 times.

But hey, buy a PC.

.fs.

No sir. It's the heat. There should be no steam in your jars.

Dude, get a PS, my first time I boiled exactly how the tek says, 75% of cakes got contammed, and I was fairly sterile in all my processes.

4 days ago, I inoculated 16 jars using pf tek that had been sterilized without a PC, i just used a big pot and some water, and right now every single jar has mycelial growth without any contams.
