Pressure Cooker

I have a small pressure cooker that only goes up to 10 psi, will this still work for sterilizing grains?

You will have to cook longer at 10 PSI. There is a chem equation that will give you the exact time, but I dont know it off hand. If I find it I'll let you know. I say cook it half an hour longer than the teks tell you to IF you are doing PF cakes. If you are doing agar, it gets tricky.

Thanks, I'll just cook for about 30 minutes longer. BTW I'm doing millet.

Pressure and temperature are directly related. At 15psi, a pressure cooker has an internal temperature of around 121C. At 10psi, the internal temperature of the pressure cooker will be lower. At standard pressure, the internal temperature of the pressure cooker will be 100C. Most things will die after a little exposure to 121C. Cooking longer will help, somewhat, but is not a substitute for higher temps. I would probably double the cook time for BRF to around 1.5 hrs... probably longer for whole grains with a presoak if you have problems. As long as you are clean and careful, you should be fine. With longer cook times be careful that you don't boil away all the water... an alternative to longer cook times is to cook twice. Do it once like normal, then let it cool 12-24 hours, then hit it again.
