will this birdseed substrate work?

Ok guys, this is my first time i am attempting to do birdseed. What i did was purchase "morning song" brand- wild finch seed from walmart. Then i used DethHead's birdseed tek to prepare my pint jars. That is essentially 2/3 cup birdseed into every pint jar with 1/3 cup mineral water. Then pressure cook at 15 psi for 60 minutes. But after reading around later, i found a lot of birdseed substrates make use of vermiculite. My birdseed is composed of the following items as listed on the back of the package: White Millet Red Finch Millet Canary Seed Thistle Seed Fine sunflower chips and Vitamin A, D & E supplements My questions is that will this stuff work. I made 24 jars with this stuff but have not innoculated yet. They have been sitting here with foil over the lids for several days. Thanks! Much appreciated. (p.s. I plan on innoculating with camb's and mexi-cub)

The thistle is debatable, and too many sunflower seeds are ..but the mix look ok. Without verm you have to know your mix is --Perfect--. The verm holds moisture, airates the mix allowing the network to spread fast and also prevents wet spots in the jars. If the jars look really good go for it, but I will tel you birdseed is extremely picky, and if you are not sure you like what you have go at it again....steeping seed 15 minutes, mixing with verm and Pressure cooking(You have to P.C birdseed)45b minutes, the result should be an unexploded mix that does not roll around nor does it stick. Birdseed is fast, very, very fast when you get it right...But a motherfu.. until you get used to it. You make the call, but seed can colonize a pint jar in 1 week when right, or you can wait weeks and it will die off and never colonize. Keep notes and pay attention because it really it something you have to get used to, but it is also worth it...Good luck..
Going crazy will drive you mad, but once you get there the rest is easy.....

Sounds like a good mix to me. Good lord, this post is from 2001!
I would make sure that there isn't a birdkote or any anti-fungals in there. But I see no problem with that mixture. I would use a bit less water than 1/3 cup. Try 80-90cc and steep your seed first.

i think you need to forget all this seed and water mixing shit and look at zaz's tek. soak the seed overnight and rinse well and drain for one hour-then PC. Works EVERY time (for water content that is) and minimal hassle. Jake H P.S.>almost birdseed mix will work-wild bird, finch, and anything millet based is easy to obtain and grow on, and just make sure that most of it is millet and you'll be good to go.

AFOAF used that brand with great success. Soak the birdseed for 8-12 hours let it drain until it won't drop one drop. load, pc, wait.

Vit ADE supplements are a waste of time , all you need is contained in the seeds themselves . These vitamins will be destroyed in the pressure cooker anyways , especially the A & D . Try this mixture RED OR WHITE MILLET OR A MIX OF BOTH MILO RAPE SEED A FEW SUNFLOWERS A LITTLE DRY CRACKED CORN

I am experimenting with substrates, i used birdseed but having a problem maybe you can address it, i soaked the wbs about 10 hours allowed to drain a couple hours, shook several times, pressure cooked 90 minutes at 15 psi, 3 days later it has little worms in it, any ideas, used a p.o. envelope filter under the lid with 2 holes in the metal lid, and two coffee filters over the jar with a tie while pressure cooking, thanks
