Whats your Favorite Substrate?
    #2223703 - 01/06/04 06:21 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Appearently all the health food stores in my area have the same supplier, at least when it comes to organic rye berries. All four health food stores I have visited had to pull thier supply of rye berries because they had "bugs" in them, and they arn't going to order from that supplier again because this has happened more then once. Now im at a loss, I have used rye as my substrate for 4 years with adequate results. Now the only way I can aquire any is if I special order it over the internet. I have tried WBS once as it turned out in disaster, I dont know if it was the quality of seed or what, but it ended with 100% contamination. Is there a specific brand of seed that works better then others? I would like to use some kind of seed because it is cheaper then rye and can prove to have the same results. Thus bringing me to my question: Whats your favorite substrate? Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the ideas, I bought some WBS at the local pet store, I hope this works. The ingredents are Millet, Milo, Sunflower, Wheat, Groud yellow corn, Calcium Carbonate, salt, Steamed Bone Meal, Vitiamine A palmitate, Vitiamine D3 supplement.
Anybody see anything in there that could be potentally bad? Where coould one aquire pure millet?

WBS, I especially like it ground, and put into the PF tek, as a replacement for the BRF.

I suspect that grains not marketed for human consumption will always be more contamination-prone. Grains you buy at the grocery store, like popcorn or rye berries, are just cleaner than birdseed. WBS is not practical at all without a pressure cooker, and even with one, you have to be extra-careful about PCing it for the full hour at a full 15 psi. Boiling it the night before should clean it up even more, since many of the endospores will start to germinate and be more easily killed come sterilization time.

Best success rate so far for me was with popcorn. I found it's easier to prepare and colonize than any other grain I tried so far.

It's so cheap, easy and damn fast colonizer. Just give it a try!

Follow this tek for preparation. 100% fool proof :

It really worths a try in my opinion.

Got a feed store that processes on site, which keeps the cost way down.

Popcorn the last few months - having much more consistent results. Just don't overcook or leave soaking too long - you'll get gooey, gross crap instead of good white stuff.
