Sorry that you have to argue against it. Stem cell research is being repressed for profit and "feel good" religious ignoramouses, in my opinion. If we allow stem cell research, what happens when we cure diseases that normally funnel millions of dollars to Big Drug companies? And "god" forbid we ever try to meddle with his "creation." Sorry I can't offer you any stats, facts, whatnot, but it's your debate, not mine :wink:

You'll have a really difficult time debating the morality of the research itself. However, there are very good arguments against public funding for it.

Actually, come to think of it, I've heard some people argue that with the overpopulation problems the world faces already, it would be irresponsible to continue to make people live longer.

If the debate is just whether or not scientists should be allowed to do stem cell research or not, I can't help you with the 'against' position. If the debate, however, is whether or not the federal government should fund stem cell research, I CAN help you there. As a matter of legality, it is technically illegal for the federal government to fund something like stem cell research. Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution delineates the very few things that the federal government is allowed to do. The only mention of science in this section is Clause 8: To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries. So the only function of the federal government in matters of science is to secure patents/copyrights/etc for limited amounts of time. Many, unfortunately, use the appearance of the phrase 'general welfare' in the Constitution to justify the government intervening in any part of life, such as the distribution of scientific research grants, that can be construed by politicians to further the public good. This is akin to the alcoholic justifying his drinking in some moronic manner or another -- the intent of the founding fathers, to create a LIMITED, CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC, is so undeniable, so explicit, that to question it would be something to laugh at if it weren't so common and so deleterious. This is clearly evidenced by quotes such as the following:

"With respect to the words general welfare, I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers (enumerated in the Constitution) connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators."

That the federal government does not have unlimited power based upon a politicians notion of what comprises the general welfare is further evidenced by the oft overlooked 10th Amendment to the Constitution: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. So any power not specifically granted to the federal government in Article 1, Section 8 or a subsequent Amendment, is reserved to the states or to the people.

You should be able to figure out some other arguments against the federal funding of stem cell research. Hopefully the argument in question does involve funding of the research and not just the research itself, just wasted a shitload of time if not. Enjoy.
