Best field guide for noob in the Pac. Northwest?
    #3333340 - 11/08/04 12:47 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I'm in Central California and would like to start hunting mushies in their natuaral habitat. I have no books on the subject nor knowledge very expansive, just curiosity. Can anyone recommend a book or field guide of some sort thats good for this area? I'd like to get one with color pics too since I'm not familiar with any wild mushies.

Paul Stamets book, Psilocybian mushrooms of the world is a must have if your serious about hunting these guys. John Allen (mjshroomer)also has a field guide for our area that is very helpful.

Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is also very good if you are leaning more towards the edibles.

Mushies Demystified is a great book, but it is HUGE, has many species with NO pictures and most are black and white photos and its rather technical for a newb. David Aurora has another pocket sized version called "All the rain promises..." or something like that and it has all color plates for every mushroom as well as a quick id referencing chart in the front cover so its excellent for taking into the field. If you get into mushies get both, MD for the Home and "all the rain ...." for the field. Both are geared more towards edibles....

I thought the Audobon Society Mushrooms Field guide was a good one
