Best Field Guide to Date
    #4075139 - 04/20/05 01:19 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I have gathered quite a collection of field guides, but I have to say my recent purchase of the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to Mushrooms has got to be the best purchase I have made thus far. It has quite detailed and extensive information, even pertaining to those mushrooms that one might not find in most other published field guides. Overall, it was definitely worth returning my copy of The Da Vinci Code to cover the $19.95 cost. Only pertains to North America though, that leaves a few people out, but worth looking into.

That is a pretty good book b/c it's nice to compare what you have to actual photos of fungi. However, if you're really serious about identification, David Arora's Mushrooms Demystified is the "Mushroom Bible." It's got dichotomous keys that are extremely helpful in determining exactly what fungus you've found.

I agree w/ both of you.
Nat'l AS field guide is awsome, the best one that i own (Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World is my favorite though), and I read through Mushrooms Demystified at a book store, and it is definently next on my "field guides to get" list.

Yea I'd say Audubon for ease but it's missing some actives. Like azurescens or any copelandia's but I don't think the latter typically grows in north America

Well theres a reason why so many field guides a written. If there was one guide that had the perfect picture and description for every fungus then it would undoubtedly be the best. But shroom guides are obviously more specialized than that, because no one person could write the ultimate field guide without going insane. The shroomery should get together and publish the ultimate shroom field guide eh? that would put us on the map for sure!

Copes can grow from Texas to Florida and north to Georgia. The Audubon is great but the color of the shrooms is off on the photography and there is no order to his keys in his bookl. Lincoff also made up the name Stuntzii's blue legs for lack of a better name he said at the time and he had never seen a blue ringer until he lectured int he early 1980s at the Orcas Island Myco Media Shroom Conferences. He also edited the Simon and Schulster shroom guide but they did not allow him to put any Psilocybe species photos in the guide.

It is confusing wehen looking for certain species because he did not really follow Singers guide;s order to the agaricales.

Anyway, Audubon is still a great book for images. But Arora has a better guide with less pictures and only a few misidentifications. Such as the P. cyanescens image is really P. cyanofibrilosa. He never corrected that photo error in his guide.

have a shroomy day.

Also must once again mention that my field guide for the PNW is the oldest published mushroom field guide to magic shrooms which is still in print and has sold over 300,000 copies since 1976.
