best field guide?

Anyone have a suggestion on field guides?

I got the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms... it's missing alot, though.. .including azurescens, and some others that i'm looking to identify (no idea what they are).

Mushrooms demystified any good?

i started with Audubon's and bought another copy about a year ago, i like it. though, i heard somewhere that the reason for the reprint under the title field guide to mushrooms was because some of the picures where taken in europe and the difference in morphology in some of the species between continents is great enough to cause problems when doing an id from photo. i don't realy have anything to cite on that though.

Mushrooms demystified came recommended to me by someone. It?s written by David Arora, I believe. I couldn?t find it locally but when they looked it up they said it was like?1987 vintage. I have heard that all the hardcore Mycologists have it in their collection though.

I bought the new Audubon mushroom field guide too, I like it a lot. I also picked up the edible mushrooms of North America as well because I?m interested in this too. It was very expensive, but it is a good book. The Audubon field guide was the best I could find locally though and I wanted to see, touch and feel the books before I bought them. I think it?s always good to have several.

One book I decided against, that was actually pretty good was the Simon and Schuster?s guide to mushrooms. The flaw I found in this book was that it did not specify region. I don?t need to browse through all the mushrooms of the world to quickly identify a mushroom in Virginia!

As with most things, I don?t think we will ever get a guide that is perfect, so, ?many? is going to have to be the answer. It?s expensive to buy many guides, but it?s an investment in your life if you?re going to eat anything from nature. It can also pay for itself; for instance, I have discovered several edible species right on my property that are considered ?Choice? for eating. If you like mushrooms in general, just the free gourmet wild mushrooms you can identify and eat, pay for the books, and then some over time.

Having a great book is invaluable, but I have found that taking someone along with you who is experienced and has a good knowledge of mycology is much more helpful. Especially if you are looking for specific fruits. Best of luck hunting =)

i've been wanting to get mushrooms demystified, or at least just check it out, but i can't find it. i went to a barnes and nobel looking for cultivation books and asked if they caried any of Stamets's titles and after they asked me for a few example titles they asked me to leave, i'm sure they have a few field guides but i'm boycotting the mofos.

by the way, if you want a good book on general mycology that helps in understanding of differant types of fungus and teaches you the taxonamy and nomaclature, check out this.
i've never actualy read all of the book myself but i'm not always known for my patience(plus i'm always reading at least three other books at a time).

First of all, you should realize that there is no book which contains all species.

Mushrooms Demystified, by David Arora, is the best all-around book for identifying mushrooms. It has excellent keys, descriptions, photographs, and writing. Almost every professional mycologist I know uses this book. Its one major fault is that it is written primarily with the west coast of the United States in mind (although species not found in that area are covered). Only about 10% of the species covered are represented in color photographs. This book covers more species than any other book you would probably consider purchasing.

The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, by Gary Lincoff, is a good book for those who prefer to identify mushrooms by comparing photographs to specimens first. Its greatest fault is a lack of keys.

Mushrooms of North America, by Roger Phillips, is similar to the Audubon Guide but larger, both in size and number of species. It also has no keys for identification beyond genus.

Mushrooms of Northeastern North America, by Alan E Bessette, Arleen R Bessette, and David W Fischer, is an excellent book, but limited in region to the area from North Carolina west to Kansas and north to Hudson Bay. It has excellent keys, and the photography is some of the best. Less than half of the species are represented in photographs.

There are numerous books devoted to one or a few genera - these tend to be relatively hard to find, but generally have excellent coverage of the group of mushrooms they intend to cover. Most of these books will probably have to be special ordered.

Most books with the words Encyclopedia or Complete Guide in the title are pretty coffee table books with very nice color photography. They tend to emphasize edible and common mushrooms and none of them I have ever seen have covered anywhere near all known species of mushrooms. Some of them have good recipes.

this one is prolly the most comprehensive and fun and easy, but it's huge!!!!! he actually updates it frequently, so the comment about it being old is wrong...the new edition is just out...it's incredible.

the books are all fairly good.
you should build a library of them.
get them, lots of them. no individual book can help you POSITIVELY id any mushroom. it will take several.

Mushrooms Demystified is the best IMO
Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World is the best for focus on Psilocybin containing species.
Audobon's guide did not impress me.

While Mushrooms demystified is a good overall book on mushroom identification there are several mushrooms in this guide which have bheen mididentified
A good example is the photograph labeled Psilocybe cyanescens which is actually a Paul Stamets photograph of Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa.

I had originally on several ocassions informed both Paul and David of this error and they have not bothered to correct the misinformation in their book.\

Additionally even Paul Stamets guide is filled with many errors and even some misidentification.

One example is he lists my mushroom Psilocybe samuiensis as being Psilocybe samuiensis Guzman, Allen and Merlin when in fact is is Guzman, bandala and Allen and he was informed of this error and several others yet susequent [printings failed to correct the text. even the mushroom cultivator has several errors int he reference section listing references which cannot be found in journals becasue opf typos, whicha also have never been corrected.

O.K. Miller has an excellent field guide on edible and poison shrooms

AS for a good book on Gymnopilus species Joseph Amirrati, Mushrooms of the Nowrthwest and Canada is an excellent guide and an over all field guide is the Audubon Guide edited by Gary Lincoff who also edited the SImon and Schuylster book, who by the way refused to let Lincoff put any psilocybe species inthe guide.


Then there is paul stamet's book Psilocybine Mushrooms of the Workld and if you are interested in local books there is my Magic Mushrooms of the pacific Northwest, the oldest Magic Mushroom Field Guide int he world still in print 25 years after it first appeared.

Regarding Barnes and Noble, any of their stores will order, if asked at any counter anywhere in the USA both of Paul Stamets Mushroom cultivation guides and that includes the medicinal mushroom and Gourmet Mushroom book. In fact it wold be illegal for them not to order since these books are published and listed int he yearly Books In Print which all major new book store sellers use to purchase merchandise for their customers.

A clerk can get in trouble from his emplyer for refusing to order any books which are listed in the Books in Print.

Many public libraries carry those Stamets books except that young adults usually steal these books from the various libraries in locations where they live.


The University of Washingtons Books store which once sold over two thoudand copies of my book two years ago refused to carry it becasue someone had stolen over 23 copies from their shelves. But a clerk can and will order any book when asked to do so. So I would complain to the manager of the Barnes and Nopble where this incieent occurs. I have seen both Stamets cultivation book as well as his PMotW book ibnt he University Villages Barnes and Noble Store in Seattle and at several of their out laying stores.

I just went and got the National Audobon Society's Field Guide to North American Mushrooms today at Books a Million.

I can say, there were 2 other books there, and this was the ONLY one that labeled species, all their info, location in North America, their edibility and halucinagenic properties and their grow conditions, along with beautiful pictures of everything.

I'm very happy. I'm gonna go out mushroom hunting this fri or sat locally in a state park. I'll bring back some specimins and take some pictures.
