West central U.S......hmmmm....are you lucky or what... to have the "BIBLE" of general field guides written and based on mushrooms in your own backyard (but not restricted to)....Mushrooms Demystified (Arora) as of course already mentioned....though based on U.S. west coast it has many references to eastern and southern occurring species and several possiblies of mushrooms that might occur....people from the top of Canada to the Keys and central U.S. hunt mushrooms with this one in hand though it can be a bit bulky but worth it.....I meet countless Western & Eastern European, Russian, (start out young in these places when the Boletes and Chanterelles they're picking are larger than they are at the time) Asian, Latin, and Antarticans who all own this book and use it in they're OWN COUNTRIES!!.....(the world now speaks english)....all the suggestions are phenominal as you can never have enough cross reference (to compare all the conflicting information) and pictures, pictures, pictures,....did I mention pics?....pictures can be worth a thousand descriptions sometimes....but only in conjuntion with the words....as Im sure your well aware....the bulk of your finds might not be nesseccarily what you set out for so some good general field guides are essential because alot of figuring out what you have is knowing what you DON'T have and a book more limited in its scope might not be as helpful with that.....another general reference type of field guide was mentioned was Hallucinogens. Poisonous Mushrooms of the Northern United States and Canada by Ammirati....prof. at U. of Washington....which shows you not only many of the types you might be looking for.....but also many of the similiar poison ones you're encountering now on your searches along with some of the incredible edibles which occur in your area....with pics....the 1986 version has dropped the "Hallucinogens" from the title and with less emphasis....of course you cant leave out Rogers or Audobon which is is crammed packed with pictures....tough as nails.....and can fit in your pocket....of course....all these were mentioned.....and though its tough... see if you can't hunt down (pardon the .........never mind) "Demystified" in the hard back (which might almost be impossible) as it was a limited edition in hardback and discontinued many years ago but the're still around.....but judging by your finding abilities im sure you'll come up with one some where....
