Got my mom to buy me the "National autoboun society field guid to north american mushrooms" today for $18! Now i can i'd some of the stuff i'v been finding.

As a tip, don't over-rely on those pretty photographs. Make sure you verify your IDs by reading the text description at the back. If the text description isn't right then you've got the wrong species. Think of the photos as confirmation of what the description tells you is a match. If both match, then you're on to something.

Finally, remember that (according to Tom Volk), there are estimated to be 1,500,000 species of fungi in the world, of which about 70,000 have been described. The Audubon Society Field Guide describes about 800. So expect that it won't be too hard to find things that aren't in your book. That's not because the book sucks - far from it. There is no complete book on the subject, and there is not likely to be one in our lifetimes.

awesome dude!  getting a field guide is always fun! :smile:

i got my first one last july.  it's peterson's guide to mushrooms, which isn't too great.  i've heard the audobon one is better, but they are both weak compared to arora's 'mushrooms demystified,' or so i've heard.

effed also had this one book that had a bunch of good photos showing only the fungi species of the northeastern united states.  i don't know what it was called or who it was by, but books like that can be pretty good, too, i think.

i'm planning on getting 'mushrooms demystified' asap, though! :smile:

Rebel_Steve, would this be the book you're referring to (about Northeastern North America)? It's a great book. I got a copy even though I don't live in the area covered.

Thanx Michnast, Toxic. I'm stoked, i love being out in nature, this is such a cool hobby.  They had about 4 other mushroom books at the store i was at, this one looked the best, while there is great pictures for everything, it has a lot of info too. And unlike the other ones it called the special mushrooms Hullucinaginic (sic) instead of just poisonous. I will try to keep yall updated on my hunts.

Today I just bought David Arora's Mushroom Demystified. It was a little pricey but worth all of it.

Mushrooms Demystified isn't pricey. This book is pricey. Note that it's Volume 5. Every inividual volume costs like that one.
