How good is this field guide?
    #1165630 - 12/23/02 07:35 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hey all,

I just bought my first mushroom key, " The Audobon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms." Hoping to use it next time I go picking. Anyone familiar with it? Any comments on the quality?

Yeah, its an OK field guide. It does not go as in depth as "Mushrooms Demystified".

If you live in North America, even in the PNW, you should really buy Mushrooms demystified by David Arora, it is just spectacular.

Good luck however!

Now that I noticed that you're location is "Northern California", you should definetly check out Arora's book.

He's from Santa Cruz, (southern bay area), and is constantly referring to "our area"... So, its just a great book to have if you are in the vicinity.

The Audubon Guide is pretty good. The thing it most lacks is keys to identify species. The photos are among the best (although small), and the descriptions are excellent.

There is one thing you should keep in mind when you use it. When you find a photo that seems to match the mushroom you've found, go to the text part of the book and compare the description to your mushroom. If they don't agree then you got a "false positive". Many mushroom species are extremely variable in appearance and you may never find a specimen that looks like the photo in Audubon. Use the "Look Alikes" section of the descriptions to help find better matches.

In other words, the text portion of the book is more important than the photos. Rely on the text much more than the photos.

As others have already mentioned, David Arora's Mushrooms Demystified is pretty much unbeatable, especially if you live on the west coast. Most professional mycologists I know use it as one of the first places to look something up.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!

Alright then, it looks like I'll be getting myself a copy of Mushrooms Demystified.

Thanks for the input.

good call. audobon's is great too but MD is better, especialy if you're in the PNW.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
