If only there are other ways to growing mushroom

Hope i'm not posting in the wrong forums. I read the rules already

I am missing lots of things for my mushroom growing...

Large pot for steaming
Horticultural vermiculite (medium or fine grade - not powdery)
DESICCANT (drying mushrooms) (scientific - chemical - lab supply)
I can't even guarantee that i can find fresh mushrooms for the spores.
I can't even buy online because i don't have credit card or any card that can pay my parents also have no cards.

So i can't grow mushrooms then?

Or are there any really simple alternatives? I'm not growing mushrooms to eat so do i still need those equipment? I also don't ask for really big growths just a small pin and i'm happy with it.

There are also a few things i don't understand.

1.)Brown rice powder, vermiculite and distilled water are mixed and loaded into a 1/2 pint jar, which is steam sterilized. The jar is then inoculated by the spore syringe.

Whats the purpose of stweilizing the mixture?

2.)After the substrate cake in the jar colonizes and begins to show signs of fruiting, the cake is released from the jar and placed into the dual chambered terrarium to fruit.

From some pics it looks as if the "cake" is growing mold. So that is called fruiting?

Mold = bad. If you saw cakes with mold on them, they were pictures of contaminated cakes.

Fruiting is when the cakes grow mushrooms, like this:

You have much reading to do. But cheer up, it's fun!  :thumbup:

So i can't grow mushrooms then?

Unfortunately, the first disappointment most new growers experience is that they can't just grow with stuff around the house and some cap from a sack. You do need, at the LEAST, what you listed. And to see the growths you see on this forum, you'll want to upgrade later on to a PC (pressure cooker) and grains.

Whats the purpose of sterilizing the mixture?
This is to insure that all endospores and bacteria already inherent in the mixture die so that they  may not compete with the mycelium after it's inoculated into into the substrate.


From some pics it looks as if the "cake" is growing mold. So that is called fruiting? 


The shrooms we deal with are not mold, they are  :loveeyes::mushroom2:fungi:mushroom2::loveeyes:
The fruits ARE the mushrooms that we all love.  :smirk:

Mold is black or green, and always bad. :mad2:  :sad: :mad2:

if you do your homework, you'll find a way around everything you mentioned EXCEPT the lack of a pressure cooker. you are almost certainly destined to fail without one.

okay here you go man first of all vermiculite is easy to find anywhere hell even Walmart and Kmart sell it
second desiccant is not nessecary i just use a big fan
third dont go and pick mushrooms for spores
fourth buy spores with cash use a shroomery sponser cause you can trust them to send it to you they are all really great people

also i would use Wild Bird Seed also abundantly available and colonizes faster than BRF so if yourr gonna buy vermiculite just do this ( i know alot of people say its not good for beginners but this is how i started and its worked great)

mold is different than mycelium mycelium will be snow white maybe a little yellow so if this is what you're reffering to as mold than no thats not what it is mold will usually be black or green

fruiting is when the mycelium( white stuff) starts to put out little mushrooms (pins) then they grow up

you need to sterilize the substrate because otherwise it will start to grow contamninants such as mold and bacteria all you need is a large pot with a lid not a pressure cooker to start off it works quite well i have used it for all my jars and they are fine

yes after the Jar or cake is completely covered in mycelium you take it out of the jar (this is called birthing) and you put it in a terraium (mines just a tupperware container with plastic on top and give it light it will begin pinning/ fruiting and you will be happy

you can get all the spores you want through a mail in order online. check out the sponsors on this site. read the pf tek for the simple mind i am sure you will be find once you read this. also, do not listen to xistenz, you do not need a pressure cooker at all. i have been growing for awhile and i have always used the steaming method, never had a contaminated jar. good luck on future grows man.

I wonder if you're even 18. Would your parents like you growing in their house?

I agree with Floydguitar a PC lessens the chance of contams but steaming works well too. I've done well so far.

My mom lets me grow in the house, but Im 23. :smile: PCs are awesome cause at least in my experience I get 0 contams. I only steam steralized once. Lost 5 out of 24 half pints. Still not to bad, but get a PC as soon as you can.

Where do you live?
Garden centers, supermarkets, hardwear stores, chemists, and health food stores are the places to look for most stuff

...i didn't read this thread; so im sure somebodya lready posted all of this.

u can buy spores with a mailorder online. the harder part is finding an address (if u live with ur parents still). you don't have to use vermiculite. u could use birdseed, popcorn, or rye berries. all u really need is a pressure cooker. thats like 35 bucks or so.
