Best mix to roll in?

I was just curious what the best mix to roll in is. Verm/cococoir, straight Vern, straight coco-coir, Somthine Else??

Also if crumbling a Cake int oa pan and casing able to yeild more thne just fruiting a plain Cake?

yes to your second question. you can use straight vermic, but i've heard that coir hair helps along the colonization of the casing, remember timing is everything!!!! once you first start to see mycelium in the vallys of the casing, initiate pinning.

Hmm.. I've actually never heard of someone rolling in verm/coir, but.. that sounds like an excellent idea! I'm going to try it.

reason i ask as to the verm/coir is cause i dropped a casing i had and ended up with a nice mix of verm/coir on 1 side of it. as of right now thast the side thats the side thats pinning while the other side is not. yet anyways. *shrug* Im sure people have used verm/coir before right?

People have used verm/coir for casings, just not for rolling cakes in I believe. I think it's a good idea to roll in verm/coir now that the idea is there.

And yes, casing will most definately increase your yield, but relatively cakes produce an equal amount by themselves as they would in a casing if the cake is given optimum growing parameters. Figure most casings have 2 or 3 cakes in it, so you will need to divide your casing yield by the amount of cakes in it to get the average that each cake is producing.

Rolling in vermiculite is a PITA. Even when you roll in dry verm with the cake sopping wet, it really doesen't stick very well. I find myself manually adding to the parts that were less than optimally coated.

I think with a coir/verm mix, you could get a much more even coating.. It would be like a super thin mini-casing.

kramer gets a good covering(an even 1/16") all the way around rolling in fine verm.....
there was someone that posted a while back claiming good results rolling in potting soil... everyone kinda laughed it off ...but i could see it working...
kramer says that his verm works to good to even think about trying anything else  :thumbup:

I think that's my problem, at least.. my verm is pretty coarse. I should dig to the bottom of the bag and use some of the finer stuff for rolling.

Just put it on and dont roll it. I dont actually roll my cakes.

Adding coir would not be a good idea. It would serve absolutly no benifit. Coir is put on casings because the casing layers are 1/2"-3/4" (maybe more) thick. If you put straight verm down..the myc has a hard time quickly colonizing the surface. The purpose of verm is to hold in water, this is why its added to coir for a casing mix because coir dries out quickly.

In cakes its only a VERY VERY thin layer going on the outside so the myc has no problems colonizing it. But also because its so thin you need the layer to hold all the water it can. If you put coir in there..that part wouldnt hold water as well and could actually cause your cake to end up drier.

I use fine verm myself however Sam loves his course stuff and you should see some of the cakes he gets
