question about Vermiculite/CocoCoir 60-40 tek
    #5467785 - 04/01/06 02:42 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys,

I've read the tek about the 60/40 Vermiculite-CocoCoir casing.
My question is
When it is said that the Vermiculite must be a bit more in volume than Coco Coir, are we talking about Coco Coir dry or already mixed with water?
Thanks everyone

already mixed.
Put the coir into a bowl and hydrate it. Mix it up until it becomes sort of supey. You want all the fibers to have gotten hydrated (no more clumps at all).
Then add the same amount of vermiculite and a bit more (so in the end you have about 60/40 verm/coir). The vermiculite will soak up the rest of the water. Add more water until you have saturated the mix and stur it all up... thats it

"Then add the same amount of vermiculite and a bit more"

Ok, the same amount aas what?
Same amount as the soupy cococoir (this means, already hydrated), or same amount as the cococoir prior to hydration? Sorry for the questions but i wanna make sure. thx

after you have hydrated the coir it will have expanded. How ever much (by volume) is there at that point is your reference. The 'soupy' coir is what should be 40% of the total mix.
After you've mixed the verm with it you will have a soil that is sort of black (coir) with golden flakes (verm). Check out any of the pics with coir/verm casings and you will see what I mean. With a 60/40 you will be seeing a bit more of the flakes than the pure black of the coir while you mix it up .
