Optimum case sizing
    #3283860 - 10/27/04 12:58 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hello, soon my first PF cakes will be inoculated.

I wanna do some casings as well, what are the ideal measures of,
- casing container
- colonized layer, thickness, but also length

Should i dunk before I case the cakes?

Regards,
MF

By what I have read many people say that surface area gives you more yields. You could either make the biggest (in length & width) that will fit inside your PMP or make a couple. Remember not to make them so deep 1"-1.75" seems to be a good depth for substrate, then 1/2" for casing on the bottom, and 1/4"-1/2" of casing on the top. Good Luck.

P.S. Dunking is a thing of preference. Some people do some people dont. I did my first time but next time I wont. I think that dunking is more for cakes since when you take them outta the fridge you put them in to fruit and with casings after dunking the myc would have to colonize the top casing layer so dunking and cold shocking would kinda slow down colonization since you triggered fruiting with lower temps. Just make sure you keep the casings moist and you'll be good. Then when all the myc start poking through the surface, patch, let the rest of the myc come up and when the "terrain" looks even introduce light and in no time you'll start seeing pins.

Thanks QbanMojo,

So length goes above depth? Better a long shallow container then a narrow deep one? And what a bout a long deep container ?

Serious?

Ummmm...depth does matter but it would be a waste to get a container 8" deep.

well Im about to post a log as soon as my 24hrs are up so I can put pics with it. I just recently fruited 15 cakes 1/2 pint brf. After harvest I dunked 18hrs, then crumbled and cased them all toghether. the container I put them in is about 12"x6"x6". The substrate layer was probably 2 1/2" with 1/2"-3/4" casing mix on top and bottom. The pins just came in and its a beautiful thing, sooooo many. Now I could have probably made two similar sized casings with half the amount of substrate in each, but from what Ive read deeper substrates mean bigger mushies and more flushes so long as no contams get to them. Ive heard recomendations as high as 4" of substrate but I think 2" is optimal. My other casing I used 1" and it fruited well, just slightly smaller mushies. I should be posting my log later this evening.

good luck
beejay

Cool Beejay! Thanks for the tips, I am curious to your pics! (And log!)

You made me remember that I can also case the second flush, after having caked them in the 1st flush...

My plan is to start with 10 brf 1/2 pint (250ML) jars. 2 I will roll and dunk, 2 I will roll, 2 I will just fruit and I want to case 4 of them.
Buttt I think I will case the other cakes as well after the 1st flush!
I like to dream about this stuff just like when I was growing some Skunk @ home many years ago I read everything I could..

What is the size of your fruiting chamber? 15 cakes in it right?

Maybe if I case all of them 10 cakes it will work in a smaller PMP?

Ok here we go again!

Thanks,
MF

well I fit 15 cakes and a small casing in a fish tank tha was 1'x3'x18" It was super cramped, I should of takin pics. If your able after your test run I would construct some sort of martha. They are way cool, spacious and require less mainenance was constructed. Well I cant post ics till 11:00 pm my time so about 6:00 am round you. check em ou when ou wake up :;

one/three inch long, high or broad? seems a mistake?

Yes as a matter a fact I read about the Martha setup yesterday and I like it very much. I think you can have casings on multiple levels? But I dont have the space right now, and visitors would see it to easy, the PMP can be hidden more easy. In the future I might give it a go though!

A pitty thatI/we must wait for your log, I am very information horney these days! Especially logs and pics give fuel my growing spirit!

Ha det bra!
