Is that why I get so confused reading here? LOL I think a big chunk of this forum has put their own spin on the meaning of words AND math here and I love it, it's very creative and shows such a comfort level with the abstract and feeling the essense behind words to gain understanding.

Facts???????????????? I'll give you fact. OJ simpson is walking around a free man found not guilt of the murder of Nicole Simpson.

As much as people want to cling to facts for saftey, they are not the source. The way this world works and always has, we might as well consider ourselves living in science fiction.

Fact: Al Gore got the most votes in the last presidential election. The electorial college says George Bush is the majority winner. ?????????????????????

I don't know why we bother with them.

well, ya, lookey here.this is funny shit. In the OJ case, the actual facts had him guilty as all hell. BUT, because of the racial opinions of the collector of facts, the facts collected were deemed useless and OJ was found innocent because of someone else opinions.

Al gore had more people vote for him then Bush. The facts say, Gore was the majority winner. Because of someones OPINION that the electorial college is the fair way to determine the majority winner, Bush won.

In both cases, OPINIONS prevailed to be stronger over facts.

Opinions rule the world. Facts are just crap we manipulate to serve our opinions and objectives it seems and they don't seem to matter much when push comes to shove.

How can you say that the earth "revolving around the sun" is a fact NOW, but that the earth being flat wasn't a fact in the day and age when almost everyone believed THAT to be true?

You have an inconsitency to your system, and it lies in the "fact" that human consciousness is purely subjective. If everyone believed that the earth was flat then, then it was just as much a FACT then as your example is today.

Given that the question is posed relative to the time being questioned, and not the modern time that we currently (but have not always) perceive(d) things from, there is no discernable difference between the example given that you've discredited as being fact and your own example of fact.

The one who says that each person is entitled to his own facts is simply trying to change the meaning of the word 'fact'. Changing the meaning of words to give them completely subjective interpretations defeats the purpose of language, which is by design a means for communicating ideas.

While I agree with this statement being an explanation for one of the primary causes for misinterpretation of language, you must take into consideration that we are working with a flawed and incomplete "set" in the first place. Words must be capable of multiple meanings because there is not a word for every concept we are trying to convey. Sometimes using a word loosely is the only way to convey what you are thinking at all, whether it ends up being clear to everyone or not.

The ones who it still has a chance of getting through to are the ones who also practice similar modes of thinking. Using words loosely is just open-mindedness acting upon the primitive english language.

I've said it before, but no one really listens... the only way to avoid this kind of confusion is something along the lines of a full re-working of the english language.

The closest thing I've seen so far was English-Prime, which I think we could all benefit from if it were to be largely adopted.. but I don't see that happening any time soon, since it takes considerably more effort (something we humans seem to be short on) to convey thoughts in E-prime.

with contradictory opinions, there however cannot be two contradictory facts. This is inherent in the definition of the word fact. One could argue that facts do not exist and that words can only convey opinion, but that would only be his opinion, :smirk: and If everybody believed that then we would still be living in the stone age.

Okay, to simplify: facts exist, but it is impossible for any human being to know fact.

A subjective experience means that we have subjective "facts" (is that defined as opinion?). We cannot ever know true, absolute fact because it exists completely outside of us - our perceptions are unable to observe, experience, or know an objective reality by the very fact that it is a perception.

Cold, hard logic.  :syringe:

"our perceptions are unable to create an objective reality by the very fact that it is a perception."

I agree. Our perceptions do not create objective reality. The objective reality already exists.

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention and put the wrong word in there. It should read: "our perceptions are unable to observe, experience, or know an objective reality by the very fact that it is a perception."

Is that why science says, once we start observing something, we change it and can't actually see something as it is? LOL

Depends on what the something is

Certainly atoms

As the photons used in viewing them

Change their momentum and position

If only we had a non-light dependant awareness
