Re: Tool [Re: silversoul7]

Found that somewhere on the Internet a while ago... Already posted it here but since there's another Tool thread, I might as well post it again.

Recently, a friend of mine who suggested this forum showed me an interesting link to a post from an avid Tool fan. It involved a thorough investigation of a supposed alternate track order behind the album Lateralus by Tool. The poster had heard from a friend that there was a different order to Lateralus, and decided to look into it himself. If you looked into the provided link above, his process is explained much mroe thoroughly, but basically he realized (as many of us Tool listeners have) that the drum beat for track #9: Lateralus on the album follows the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence, to summarize, is a mathematical pattern where you add the last two digits of the pattern to get the next (ex.- 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). When this pattern is graphed out, it forms a spiral, which is what Lateralus means. Though he looked beyond this and realized that if he were to lay the songs on the graph in accordance with the Fibonacci sequence (this idea is explained further in the link) then he could perhaps come up with an alternate track order. His process began with placing track numbers 6 and 7 in the center of the graph seeing as he knew they had to run together. Then through a process of creating two spirals, he finally found an alternate order to the album that, if they were edited correctly, would make all the tracks run together almost as one song. Suddenly tracks were making much more sense. He discovered that if this new order were to be true, then track #4: Mantra, would go after track #8:Ticks and Leeches. The last line of Ticks and Leeches is "I hope you choke", and the sounds of Mantra, previously believed to be whale noises, could in fact be viewed as a distorted choking noises. Random pluckings of strings at the beginning of track #5: Schism were now revealed to be the finishing chords for track #7: Parabola. Clues to this alternate order are given in lyrics throughout the album, such as "Spiral outm keep going" or "I know the pieces fit".

So for all who are interested, though this may not work correctly without the correct editing software according to the poster that discovered this, the alternate track order is as follows: 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10. The link to more substantial evidence of this alternate track order theory is http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/question/insight7.html . Please respond with any thoughts or comments on what you think of this theory. I've attempted contacting editors of the Tool website via email on occasion to ask them if they see any truth behind this idea, but alas, no responses. So let me know what you think about this.

You guys just aren't looking for the deeper meaning in his songs. Take that song I posted earlier in this thread. On the surface, it's about getting raped in prison, but if you look deeper, it's making a statement about society, and how people get off on hurting others.

maynard was also supposedly molested as a child/teen.

the lyrics have multiple meanings

Trying to read into the lyrics is like analyzing a dream. Dont bother trying to figure out "what a song means" based on the lyrics, it depreciates the rest of the song.
As far as Tool being the bees knees, they really aren't all that special. Danny Carey's drumming basically carries the rest of the band, if you listen to the guitar and bass lines, they aren't usually very complicated, and most complications come from timing signature issues which no doubt come from DC's interrest in tribal rhythms etc. That said, they are a great band, and I used to listen to them every day. Now I tend to skip over them for something else when loading the cd player. they're good shit though.

I don't think their bass is anything special, but the drums and guitar have some amazing sounds. And whats this about Danny carrying the band. What about Maynard, the guys voice is fucking phenominal.

Tool is not about individual complexity as much as the band as a whole and the sound they create, the atmosphere, and the emotion.

The drummer has a unique style becuse of how he sets up his drums from my understanding.

Either way, tool is phenomonal becuse they are unique and talented.

I dont really pay attention to vocals much, but yeah maynard is good. but a singer is never a musician, at least thats my personal prejudice. the guitar comes up with cool sounds yeah, but any technicality isn't coming from the strings, its from the drums. Danny carey has been a studio drummer for years, spent time abroad studying new rhthyms and percussion instruments. he uses tabla drums, polyrhythms (playing two rhythms that are on different timing simultaneously). . . he really is the best musician in the band, but they all gel together to make a very cool sound.

someone said they can't dance to TOOL,

at all the TOOL shows i've been to,
i could see dotted throught the crowd,
one person in twenty maybe,
doing the contorted, spastic, voodoo TOOL dance,
and i was always one of them,
tripping balls, part of the interactive circut...

TOOL is not a rock band,
they are awakeners of the Plasmates,
midwives to the birthing of the larva
that are waiting dormant in their primate incubators,
seeking fusion with the pineal via the sacro-cranial pump.

between you and me,
i think they are working for the Reptilians...

btw the next TOOL is coming next summer,
and it's goiing to kick All of our asses. ; )

The lyrics are a huge part of the songs. Maynard expresses so much in them. And they're great. I would never just dismiss the lyrics. I don't agree with you at all.

And singers are musicians. Especially Maynard with his voice, he uses his voice as an instrument or tool very well.

*shrug* Never meant to imply that it was. Just saying that if you get that riled up about someone disagreeing with you over something as subjective as music.. kinda silly if you ask me.

To a certain extent yes. But only contextually, and only most accurately by fans of the genre.
