By "dark and twizted," do you mean stuff like this:

(Do unto you now what has been done to me. 2x)

I wrote a song some 4-5 years ago called "Do unto you"

Chorus:
Do unto others before THEY, do unto you....
See me as I, Do Unto You....
Feel me as I, Do Unto You....
Taste me as I, Do Unto You....

You guys just aren't looking for the deeper meaning in his songs. Take that song I posted earlier in this thread. On the surface, it's about getting raped in prison, but if you look deeper, it's making a statement about society, and how people get off on hurting others.

Well that's your problem. I have no problem being moved by it. Definitely more so than with the Dead.

silversoul, i really don't want to get into a drawn out discussion about maynard.

i know how you tool fans are about him, and his lyrics, and i have talked to many tool fans about this and they all have said what you have, but i just do not care for most of his stuff.. thats the bottom line, really.

like i said, i really dig tool's instrumentation, but even if maynard -is- so incredibly deep, i don't care for his stuff. just because it's got multi leveled meanings doesn't mean everyone in the universe is going to love it

It is funny to watch people try to dance to "Them Bonez" by Alice and Chains at a bar....!  People get all fugged up with the 7/8 timing....  (however you write timing for a measure, I am not musical theory edumacated...)

I really hate tool. I don't mind their music, I can honestly take it or leave it. What I hate are the drooling tool fan boys who act like they're fucking uber elite music snobs appreciating the finest thing to ever vibrate through space. Not only is music and art so completely subjective, but even basing it on some sort of objective taste standard tool is only middlingly decent at best.

eh.

meh, their not something I listen to very often, but I think they're pretty amazing in their own regard..very talented to say the least

I would imagine if somebody happened to hate them for whatever reason actually went to one of their shows, they would probably end up coming out afterwards with a completely new found sense of respect for them

but then again, thats just my opinion

You assume I haven't seen them live. I have. I maintain my opinion that they're not bad, probably even pretty good if you happen to especially like that type of music which honestly I've been quite burnt out on for awhile now.

i have a soft spot for them.
i would call them a stepping stone to which i found even greater things.
i certainly couldnt have gotten where i am without where ive been tho.

i still listen to them, and will definatly catch a show next possible time.
but i have also started listening to them alot less, since ive started listening to so much more variety. due, i think, to the way i first started expanding when i was listening to them.

blah.

Tool sure is great. Danny Carrey is my biggest inspiration as a drummer, Maynard is incredible. I love how both guitars work as part of the rhythm section and how Adam plays to explore sonically and not to play cheesy riff metal. Tool is transcendental, shamanic, engaging and rhythmically amazing without being cold wanker, "prog" in the Dream Theater sense. They demand patience from the listener but they deliver release in spades.

But that being said, I must say that Tool in the arena setting, which let's face it folks is the only way you're likely to ever see them, is a poor set and setting. The one time I saw them was in a huge, shitty pavilion filled with meatheads spilling their beer all over each other. Also, I could barely see Danny even though i had a good seat and it just didn't feel very intimate. The band members all seem to function as seperate units too. When I saw them Osseus Labyrinth was doing their show which was really inredible. Everything was definately there but man, I'd just love to live one of the dreams I've had of seeing them in somebody's living room.

And why is your opinion that Tool sucks any more valid than my opinion that your opinion sucks?

I's say that even in the huge arena type setting Tool is unbelievable. I ended up just standing by myself savouring the music like 10 feet from the speakers. Even though it wasn't an intimate setting and I had to deal with the crowd composed mostly of jackasses I could have care less. The music, to say the least, completely enveloped me and I left the concert in complete and utter awe.
