Growing in basement possible? ( contaminates?)
    #3201501 - 09/30/04 08:20 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there ^_^/

I just have a question pertaining to possible contamination. I have my spore syringes, my pressure cooker, everything I need, but, the only area I can grow in is my basement, and I am very afraid of possible contamination.

It has carpeting, and I am certan spores are all over it. Once a drain backed up and partially flooded a portion, the carpet reeked of mold.

I am planning on converting a closet to a " semi " sterile area, by putting plastic over the carpet, taping it to the walls via duct tape, and steralizing everything in the general area, but I am still afraid because each time I open the door im sure contaminates will get inside.

I dont know, if anyone has any advice >_> I have $350 to work with, and willing to spend all of it to secure a location.

Pull all your carpet out-spray everything down with bleach (a few times!)- spray somesort of lysol(walmart brand) a couple times everyday for a week- remove all things made of paper or wood that has been wet-get everything (at least in one room) down to either stainless steel (sink), concrete, or formica like counter tops- oh yeah spray a shit load of lysol all the time-then if things seem to get better get some air purifiers and a dehumidifier to keep things improving.

Other than that your golden :crazy2:

I cant rip out everything sadly, sort of renting, so nothing can be perminate.

I can do all things like innoculations up stairs but I cant have anything that is " active " besides the basement >_>

this is a huge room, the bathoom is the part that flooded slightly, the carpet just got wet around the drain, which i ripped out, about 20 feet away is the closet i was planning on using, 50 feet or so is a unfineshed storage area that smells very clean, just sort of like drywall.

I need a freaking digi-cam ; ;

i didnt read all that you wrote too long and im cold but to grow in a basement is good all you need to do is make a tub in tub incubater for when you need to incubate and put another tub in there when you want to case you can case in a tub and it will keep perfect rh and temp in a tub in tub set you so long ans you spry the sides when needed

That doesn't sound so bad, just go nuts for a while with lysol down there if your worried. spend some money on a dehumidifier only if your basement is damp at times or you get leaks. Otherwise, a decent high volume air purifier oughta keep the air kleen. just don't run fans down there. My friend the squirel bitches up a storm when theres a fan running in the grow area.
good luck to you and many flushes!!

Since I took command of the basement, it has not flooded once, and is relatively dry besides when I take showers, but the bathroom is seperated by a door anyways.

I will probably use the poor mans pod method

and hope it works >_>

Hyphae will tell you its quite possible to get pounds of shrooms out of a basement.

Depends on your basement though. I'd get a HEPA or two as well

My lab was a small spare bedroom which I had spent a lot of time renovating had the double door with dead air space in between which I called the airlock. The walls were painstakingly painted with high gloss white and the window was sealed with caulk, the shade was drawn and the inside was shrink wrapped. It has a built in the wall incubator that runs next to the chimney glass shelves the works it was a totally setup lab Beautiful!!!! THEN I got married long story short I'm in the basement now it's actually worked better as far as easily optimal temps for fruiting, humidity is easier to maintain also. I've found keeping air movement down really helps and a simple 6mil. plastic room is very easy and quick to setup! Basement works for me and my friends  Heres a friends basement grow well at least one of them!

I'm a basement dweller.  Allz ye need is to pasteurize some poo/straw or some other similar bulk tingy and go from there.  At least, for me, basement=sterile no go.  I tried terrarium.  The cobweb and trich did like it.
Now we're looking at fourth flush of pasteurized poo.  I dig.  Now, I have to learn how to get a fucking even pinset.  Then I'll be able to actualize my poo potential.

For what it's worth - some years ago, I did the PF Tek with a fishtank in a small closet in one of the dampest, dirtiest, grimiest rooms you can imagine sleeping in. (mold on the bed, mushroom growing out of the carpet, etc...) And had some success with no contamination. On another occasion, however, small flies overran the terrarium.

It can be done, just bear in mind the times during which your stuff is most susceptible to contaminates. See if you can't inoculate in a clean area. And yea, go nuts with the Lysol.

Going nuts with lysol is not good advice IMO. Use chemicals sparingly when cleaning and make sure you give rooms time to air out and you should also wear a paint mask under heavy lysol spray. It's bad for your respitory system and bad for your mushies. HEPA is much cleaner. Of course lysol is a good thing to use and I do myself, just use in moderation.
