Tyvek Question
    #3199419 -

Okay, so wide mouth qt jar lids are approx 3.25 inches in diameter. When making tyvek filters, should you make the circles the same size, a bit bigger, or a bit smaller than the lid? Thank you

It seems to me that the easiest method is to make them a bit bigger than the mouth so you can secure it well just by screwing the ring on over it.

^^^^^^
thats the way I do it... I cut larger squares and screw it all down on top
of the jars... it works fine, tyvek doesnt wick water so there
is still no risks from it, you can trim it up by running a knife
under the band

I fold my Tyvek up many times then trace the band with a pen/pencil/whatever and cut an half an inch out from that, I usually make 20 or so filters with each cut, maybe a little less it been awhile.

Is it important to have the outside of the envelope facing a certain direction?

When on the jars that is...

I have been looking into tyvek. And it occurred to me that where some people are punching air holes in certain grow tanks, it could be covered with this stuff and not lose any humidity, but allow gas exchange. One could even rig up a rudimentary framework and wrap it in this material with a tray at the bottom.. would it work? I dont know anything about it really, but I imagine there has to be some pressure to force gases thru it..

Sorry if its been done already. Just a thought as I was looking at the 'What is Tyvek!' website..

They are the tear-free priority mail envelopes. On the flap it will say Dupont Tyvek. Just ask someone at the desk for tyvek envelopes and they'll give you as many as you want.

I'm sure it's been thought of, but its not clear. Since its not clear, light would be greatly diminished.

IMHO holes stuffed with polyfil work the easiest by far!

A bit bigger so the ring fits over it and seals it!

Tyvek will not hold in the water, it can still pass through if you are thinking you could just like make the whole top of your tank tyvek. Holes with polyfil I say are best.

For jars, I cut the edge out from the envelope (to get off glue spots and make it two sheets) then cut out the middle (to get out the middle seem with glue and make 4 sheets) then cut the 4 sheets in thirds and you get squares that will fit over the jar. 12 per envelope. I do like 5 envelopes at a time holding them together and get 60 squares in a few minutes. The glue sticks to lids and jars I've found.
