Has anyone else had the experience of mycelium going nuts on cakes when you place them directly on perlite? My mycelium looks like cotton coming from the underside of my cakes - is this normal?

I put mine on damp verm. The mycelium grows into it, and gets kind of fluffy in a couple of places. I find that small areas of uncolonized substrate grow very cotton- like mycelium within a day. They always produce a lot of shrooms though.

yes, that is the way to go with cakes, although most of your mush will grow along the bottom diameter of the cake. Just don't use peroxide in the perlite, and remove the cakes when they have decent sized pins.

I recently cased 2 crumbled cakes with a bottom layer of perlite and upon inspection the mycelium had tried to colonize the perlite......it had all kinds of cool ropes of mycelium growing through it!

everybody thinks that peroxide is "awsome" for mycelium... it's not... when growing different edible strains of mushrooms it's always good to have peroxide... when growing these mushrooms i think it's best to save the peroxide for killing/sterilizing certain aspects of your setup(what ever they may be) ... somepeople experimented with this (misting and pouring onto casings in a feeble attempt to sterilize it [altho it does work on cobwebs]) but it usualy ended up with a foul smell (smells like as if you were to sweat feces:D) .. unless your talking about a cobweb mold... but that's basicly why you shouldn't try h2o2 with your already colonized "whatever"...... peace and good luck
i totaly forgot about what this post was originaly for ... yea the mycelium go crazy in the perilite when you put your cakes right on it... some monkey had fruits grow out 4 inches away from the cake off of mycelium that had grown thru it ... this monkey had low humididy (only perilite) in his chamber and the fruits grew only from the bottom of the cakes ... but there was one thing tho... the fruits were all hollow... after many successive life cycles(innoculation/colonization/birth) in this environment the results were pretty much the same... also there is also the matter of perilite being engulfed by the stem(or perilite in the stem) it only happens on the bottoms of the stem but the monkey found it was a pain in the ass because he doesn't perticularly like eating perilite, and crushing it out of the bottoms of the stems made alot of dust which he isn't exactly fond of(the directions on the bag say that breathing perilite dust is harmful) .... after moving on he's realized that- it's kinda like casing but not really ... it's the lazymans casing... ... peace

If your shrooms absorb any peroxide, via the 'peroxidated perlite' or even on casings that have peroxide mixed in with the water (bad idea), they will grow up gnarly and deformed if they grow at all, you will get freaky mushrooms. You dont have to be that anal with cakes, they can be almost difficult to contaminate.
