initiating 2nd flush for casings
    #313208 - 05/09/01 02:35 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

AFOAF is wondering about her casings, because after a decent first flush, she has yet to see a second flush initiate pinning, and she's already waited three weeks since first flush harvest and is stuck.

Background: She made a large casing with 4 PF classic cakes (Crumbled onto a .75" layer of damp pure vermiculite in a 3"x8"x8" tin pan, She also added another verm layer on top.) Since this is her first attempt at casing, she's not sure what to do to get the mycellia pumping again. Should she leave in the dark and cover with saran wrap? SHould she leave in terrarium (kept between 90-96% humidity, temps range from 70-75 deg. F)? She' actually done three smaller casings (2 cake size) and already harvested all three new casings before the larger one has even pinned again! Argh!!!! The large casing's mycellia layer actually looks really healthy, nice whit color. Light cycle from 4W halogen bulb is used 12 hrs on/off. Is a recasing step necessary for each flush? Her verm still looks damp and when it doesn't, she just sprays it until it does again. She would appreciate any suggestions from y'all.

Drag a clean fork thru it, stir it up a little, like a rototiller. Mist it once a day. If it don`t pin within a week toss it.

Best thing to do is:

right after the goods are harvested (be sure to pluck out any atiny aborts), scratch all the mycelium and old casing up. Level it out and cover with a very thin new layer of casing (if there is a gap at the sides of the container fill them in). Then cover with plastic wrap- to keep the humidity in and al Foil- to keep the light out. Let sit for a few days. if you can raise the temp to optimal spawn run temp (circa 86 def F) this is better but not needed. Then when you see new mycelium growth after a few days, it is time to put it back into the fruiting chamber. Then wait like you did for the first flush.
Good Luck
HeH but whos going to listen to a "STRANGER" lol

ok .. here's what you should REALLY do ... you can "fork" it if you want... but the most basic thing you need to do is reintroduce more WATER into the environment(remember your shroomies suck up alot)... so, mist everything till it's nice and moist, cover it back up and check what happens the next day .. you should have some new "fuzz" growing or some new pins... either way you just initiated a new flush ...oh and you only need to re-case if you pulled up a significant ammount of verm when you were picking your fruits... peace and good luck

I gotta go w/ BrownPastures on this. More water and if you want to speed up the flushes, raise the temp a little (80-82). I would try this before disturbing the mycelial network w/ a scratch. Scratching is normally used to open up an overlaid casing.

It's been rumored that you can harvest a flush every 7 days if you're doing it right.
