preparation for 2nd flush

Morning all.
My first casing just gave me a nice little flush, but a bit uneven. I picked off all the shrooms, even the small ones, but the cake still has a frosty coating and a few tiny (<1cm) pins.
Am I better off resurfacing the whole thing with fresh casing material, or do I just leave it and wait for the second wave of fruits? I don't yet fully understand the concept of flushes, with my limited experience. Will those teeny pins be the fruits in the second flush, or should I remove them?

this is an excellent question. i think there are two things you can do. first, pick off the aborts(if they're not growing they are aborts) and remove any fleshy looking material that could potentially rot. do this very meticulously and try not to damage the casing any more than you have to. then patch the holes with fresh casing material. oh yeah, you could also dunk at this time. 2nd flush should start pinning within 5-7 days(rough estimate). the second option you have is just ripping up the whole thing and recasing. i have been doing this with dung because i had some brf/verm casings and i wanted to add some oomph to their second flush. and yeah, you can use dung as a casing material. i think in the future i think i will recase after the second flush instead of the first. i think you could still get a respectful yield on second flush and then recase with a nutritive casing layer for better 3rd and 4th flushes. this is kind of a spin-off of 3m's dung tek(do a search), i think he said he got like 9 flushes from a casing by scraping it off and re-applying(he was using dung, hence the name). anyway, this is dragging on...

sorry to be a pain in the ass, and basically bump my post - does anyone out there recommend one or the other of those suggestions? Presumably it's drying out while I decide - any opinions?

what i do: when a mushroom is ready i pick it. if a mushroom aborts i pick it. i mist the casing if it looks dry. the end.

..so as long as there are still pins on the top that don't look like aborts, I should leave well alone? Not even case in the old 'divots holes' (if I could still find them)....?

I always just harvest and maybe mist the casing directly. I find that alot of pins are still active. I was under the impression that most of the pins which occur during the pinning stage continue to grow after the first flush, as long as their not black headed. I leave them alone and the reduction of mushrooms on the casing increase their nutrition supply. They start to grow in no time, once again as long as they are not black headed.

some people say pick em all at once and patch. i do the complete opposite: pick em when they're ready and that's it.
it seems to me that patching requires the mycelium to re-colonize more un-colonized casing material. this takes nutrients that could be used to make fruit instead. so not patching uses less nutrients and in the end could result in more fruits (instead of more mycelium). but that's just my opinion.

I agree with Bilge. Very true, and this is my practice as well.
