whic is more potent, dried or fresh?

Would you say that if you dried P. Cubensis B+ using only desiccant, no heat, within a period of about 18 hrs, that it would be equally as potent as a fresh one?

I looked at the dosage calculator on the "Magic Mushroom Dosage Calculator" and it shows that on the average a dried shroom is only 60% as potent as a fresh one.

Now, I understand that if you don't use heat, that percentage goes up, but why do you lose potency at all if you don't use ANY heat? Please give your feedback on your experiences - and opinions.

well, you just picked up a long dead topic that people ***LOOOOOOOOVE**** to argue about. However IMHO, if you are going to neglect ratio of psilocybin to weight of consumable, fresh shrooms <i>ARE</i> stronger.... think about it, they can't really loose anything of noteworthiness. Now, when you dry them, there IS a chance you could ruin some of the good stuff. Regarldess, the best a dried shroom can hope for is to have AS MUCH AS a fresh one. Its not like it magically produces more psilocybin when it dries. Does this make any sense???

I don't know man, from experience... if you take a mushroom wet or dry.... it has the same potency. Where all the hang up comes is that you aren't taking the same weight, just the same amount of mass minus the weight of the water taht is evaporated out. Some people still swear up and down that they loose potency when you dry them.

Someone should email me a bowl.

ive taken fresh & dried cubies,
fresh gives me just a giddyness, thats about it.
dried hits faster and....i halucinate like a motherfucker!!

If dried properly (no heat) it's my experience (I've had lotsa different magics, but only experimented with dried subaerugs) that no noticeable loss in potency is caused by drying. I think the 'confusion' or differences of opinion come from the fact that the speed at which you break down the shrooms in your gut (read, ingest the psilocybin) has a big effect on how fast the trip kicks in, and how long it lasts, but not the net amount of active chemicals (psilocin/ psilocybin) that you ingest.
To explain, freshies consist of fragile, easilly digestible flesh, and the psilocin hits the blood-stream/ brain pretty quickly, peaking at about 1 hour to 90 minutes, then subsiding as no more is left in the stomach, and what's in the blood is processed/ 'used'.
The same shroom dried up and eaten whole, will take a lot longer to digest, dry shroom flesh is remarkably robust to degradation, and is broken down a lot more slowly in the gut. This means the trip kicks in more slooowly, and may last longer, cause the gut may still be releasing psilocin/ psilocybin into the blood up to a couple of hours after they've been eaten, cause they're still in there being digested... Same dose (read 'potency'), different rate of absorbtion, thus different trip experience. The exception would be if the dried shrooms are finely crushed or powdered, which would again promote rapid digestion/ absorbtion, leading to a trip that kicks in fast and hard, but doesn't last as long. I guess I should also mention that this is the same reason why I suspect that 'shroom tea' kicks in about the fastest of all (as long as there's enough shrooms in there and they're not added to actual boiling water, rather to water that's just come off the boil), and also subsides about the fastest of all (in my humble opinion...); liquid is more quickly absorbed by the gut than solids, so even a shroom tea made from dried shrooms could kick in faster/ harder than if the same shrooms were eaten/ taken (whole) wet.
Just my personal little observations, would be interested in anyone else's opinions on my musings...

it maybe better to dry them since you wont have to worry about getting little bugs in your mouth,plus they taste better and you can smoke them

^Well smoking shrooms isn't impossible... but its obviously not the best route of administration.

Drying won't cause any significant loss in potency, if done right. Actally, I haven't noticed any difference. Fresh mushrooms, though, should be the most potent, according to common sense.

I believe,and someone please correct me if Im wrong,that fresh cubes contain two actives which are psilocybin and psilocin. The latter of which is very unstable and breaks down substantially during the post harvesting period. I think that it breaks down into psilocybin when ingested,but is oxidized if you dry the shrooms.

Theres no way of figuring this out, each mushroom contains a lesser or more potency than the other.  Well, unless you have an identical twin with all the same genetics and one had taken dry, the other fresh.  Oh i'm done here!  I don't like the moosh of the mushroom when fresh, i get far out twitches for like 10 minutes - but it happens all the time so, meh!  :smile:

Actually there are 3 active alkaloids. Psilocybin, Psilocin and Baeocystin. You don't hear much about Baeocystin but I feel that it compliments the other 2 when shroomies are ingested fresh, otherwise it gets broken down very quickly along with psilocin. I've had the best trip of my life with fresh shroomies! You should try it!

Actually there's lots of actives. Norbaeocystin is another.

Mykey, you are mostly right except for the ingestion part. Psilocybin is broken down into psilocin in the body.

Check out this link see how the psilocybin (on the right) has a phosphorous group where the psilocin just has the oxygen? Extra random fact: this oxygen is the only difference between psilocin and DMT!
