Jar Issue! help a newb out!
    #3075752 - 08/31/04 09:35 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

OK, first, Ive been reading this site for a while now..learned the basics in PFTeking n the procedures.

Im having a jar issue...I cant find no-shouldered jars anywhere online...pfjars.com is too expensive to ship to Canada....mushbox's prices are just rediculous (95$CAD for 12 presterilized substrate)

Are there any stores out there that would sell them?

Also...I know theres another type of jar out there...the kind with that tyvek material on the jar lid (donnt know much about it other then I can get it from the post office).....what are the advatages of this type of jar? Where can i buy them?

Thnx alot.

Tyvek lets air exchange, keeps humidity in, and keeps contams out. You can buy them at a post office or anywhere that sells tyvek envolopes. Also, if you don't buy the substrate in the jars they're cheaper... you can make your own substrate. Just search for "wide mouth canning jars." Not one with substrate already in them. I bet you can get some shipped cheap.

Check with MycoSupply on their plastic jars, they will reduce your shipping costs a great deal.

I've been buying Bernardin 1/2 pint jars (wide mouth - make sure you get the short ones not the tall ones) at Canadian Tire - they should definitely have them in stock now - Walmart has them also - so far, I haven't seen Ball or Kerr anywhere...

yes, as long as they arent in direct contact with the bottom of the pot there will be no problem with boiling

I purchased a dozen 1/2 pint Ball regular mouth canning jars at walmart. Why would you guys say not to use them and to use the wide mouth? In the FAQ it says they are fine to use. Also i bought a do zen of em for 6 bucks.

Many 1/2 pint regular mouth jars are simply taller, and don't have a shoulder, so they'll work fine. Avoid jars that have a shoulder as it will be hard to get the cakes out.

Also, why didn't you get the widemouth?

wide mouth isnt always available

ejambekot. thje only problem I would forsee with them is if you try and stand the cakes on end they may topple once fruiting begins. to remedy this, lay the cakes on their sides on a few small saucers

thats a good idea prisoner. I was thinking of dunking and rolling, so that would also help stand them up becasue the extra verm on the sides. I got the regular cuz i didn't see any wide mouth.
