my problems with rye
    #3046331 - 08/24/04 11:37 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have done a couple sets of rye berries ... I did 10 jars with a spore syringe and 10 with a clean karo solution. I also did 10 brf jars with a spore syringe. All the brf jars have started and are growing quickly, whereas none of the rye have started at all. Some of the rye have wetspot and 2 had the green meanies. Regardless no mycelium is visible on the rye jars. It has been a week since innoculation.

I made the rye by soaking for 24 hours, then rinsing, then simmering for 20 mins, then rinsing and straining. I mixed it in a strainer and moved it around till no more water dripped out, then loaded it into the pint jars. I covered the jars with metal lid (with one large hole and a small injection hole), then tyvek, then the band. I put on aluminum foil and rubber band and pc'd for 60 mins. After injection the site was covered with sterile band-aids.

The only thing I can think of is that my pc sucks... Maybe its not getting up to pressure correctly and the brf only needs to be boiled or at a lower pressure? I have a mirro that holds 4 pints, there is a weighted system with no guage. No matter how long I leave it on high the weight will not giggle but it does move a little and let out steam.

If anybody has any suggestions or ideas I would be really happy to hear them as the brf takes forever and I just want to shake those jars and have them colonize in half the time. The last time I tried grain I did wbs using the same procedure (except for the band-aids and no simmer) and every jar had wet spot(a foul stench and a greyish like contam colonized the jars in less than 4 days).

Today, I took my mirro 12q peace of shit back to where I got it and traded it in for a Pesto that was 18q had a guage and instructions that actually instructed you how to use it properly.

IME which is not much at all in fact I am just starting but the little exp. I have is that the mirro I bought last week was a peace of crap. The pesto is twice if not more better than the mirro.

Oh yeah the pesto was only $10 more

If your weight isn't rocking then you aren't reaching pressure, thus aren't reaching temps. Examine your PC and see why the pressure doesn't build up right. Mine has a rocker and a "safety valve", and I found sometimes the "safety valve" sticks open... I poked it a little to get it to seat properly and the rocker rocks after about a 15 minute warmup, which only takes a little above half setting on my really old electric stove. Mine is a small Mirro 8qt 10psi model.
