Cooking clay desicants...
    #2984841 - 08/10/04 06:10 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I have a medium sized baking pan about 1/2 in deep with a clay desicant we use at work.

How long should I bake it to get all the moisture out?

I cook my damp-rip for an hour and a half then break it up and give it another half hour. remember to let it cool in a sealed container otherwise it's just going to suck a heap of moisture from the air as it cools.

I think an hour with this kind of clay will do the trick.

There are different types of desiccants out there.
Damprid uses calcium cloride
desi-paks use clay

The clay isn't nearly as good as the calcium chloride.

get rid of the clay, get a stronger desiccant like calcium chloride or Drierite.

I get a bunch of free desi-paks (clay based) from work myself, but they have limited usefullness. After they take in just a little water, they can't keep the RH down very well in a sealed container. Not as well as calcium chloride or Drierite.

Most of the batches that Im drying are under 300 grams wet. Once they aere fan dried the descivant I have works well If freshly baked.

You are right about that. It does work fine if freshly baked. I got tired of regenerating the free desiccant so i finally spent the $5 and got some better stuff, well worth it.

The clay regenerates fine for me if baked @ 250 F for 3-4 hours, but this is required way too often for my tastes.
