Re: Does your desicant chmber have to be airtight?

Joe,

Don't put the dessicant in the food dehydrator. Just use the dehydrator to dry them about 3/4 (NO HEAT)....then use the dessicant seperately to make them rock hard (in a seperate drying container).

Yeah, just make sure the separate drying chamber is air tight or the mushies will never dry. You'll be drawing moisture out of the room instead of the mushies.

A plain old fan works good also.
Desicant chamber needs to be air tight.

I agree; My cockatiel used calcium chloride for a long time and he had to be pretty careful with it when it got wet. He thinks a regular fan is the way to go. Laid on it's back so it blows directly upward, the progeny laid on the grill. As they dry they actually shrink and grip the grill and each other so are not cast away. Much more quickly dried than blowing a fan at them lying on the ground. Speed of drying is the key in my opinion, and a dehydrator with the heating element removed is nothing more than a glorified fan with 'convection'. Blast-em directly on the grill of a fan, or at least try it as a side experiment and compare.

Great idea Suntzu, not that a dehydrator is bad, I just think a fan would be cheaper.
