Have you disabled the heater in a food dehydrator? How hard is it?
    #4263922 - 06/06/05 04:08 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hey-

So I want a dehydrator.. but I don't want the heat that comes with it. Any of the ones that have the option of turning the heat off or really low are really expensive.

So how hard is it to disable the heating element? If it is diabled.. will it still work as fast and as well as a desicant chamber with cpu fans?

Thanks guys

~Quiescence~

Mmm.. so let me get this straight.. I have to open it before cutting it? Could I just cut it without opening? What if it has a booby-trap? What if they secretly hid Another heater.. just to foil my plans?

Yea. So that sounds pretty easy.

Thanks man

you will want the heat. drying mushrooms completely without heat is nearly impossible as the insides of the shrooms will stay moist. id go with tahoe on this and find one with an ajustable therm, or learn some basic wiring and wire your own.

^^^ ^^^

Those sneaky bastards!

mmm.. I would really rather not use heat. How much will 95F breakdown psilocin? I assume since your suggesting keeping the heater.. that you don't think it does that much damage... yeah?
I just don't like heat...

Mmmm..

A fan and cup of calcium chloride in a rubbermaid gets them cracker dry in 12-24 hours.

I have a state-of-the-art kitchen stove that has a "dry" feature. It has a convection option, meaning it circulates the hot air thoughout the oven and cooks things faster. On the "dry" feature, a temperature as low as 90?F can be selected. I usually use 120?F for the shroomies, layed out on baking trays on a quarter inch thick of damp-rid (yes, directly on the damp rid). I find that the damp rid absorbs the released moisture from the fruitbodies and the shrooms don't stick to damp-rid as they shrivel, unlike paper towels or aliminum. I've never noticed any potency loss doing this. My personal opinion, from the chemical reactions in question, would be that potency isn't affected unless the temperatures are higher than the boiling temperature of water. I think that my oven is the perfect mixture of heat, dry air, and fast-moving (hot, dry) air.

How does this relate to your issue? Don't worry about the heat. I have never noticed a potency loss due to heat, 2g of my cambodians get people soaring into the visuals.

You arent supposed to let the poisionous substance touch the mushrooms...

Damp rid isn't poisonous, else the people who took "chasers" would be dead. CaCl2, calcium chloride.

C. Hazards Information
INGESTION:
Low in toxicity. LD(50) [Rat] = 1.4g/Kg

So unless you were breading the mushrooms in five times their weight in CaCl2, I'd say you should be OK.

[edit] Also for "yousuck", you sure do.:)

I can only relate last Saturdays experience from 2g of Cambo's....the heat I used to dry them removed so much Psioclin it kicked my ass...LOL. Seriously, though I have no way of measuring what they would have been like without drying...I was not even remotely disappointed.....quite to the contrary I was blown the hell away.

Buy an AMERICAN HARVEST SNACKMASTER DEHYDRATOR.
Low setting is 90F. No need to alter the machine, or clip any wires.

Best of both worlds. Dries shrooms, fruit & can even make good jerky.
