Calcium cloride
    #1151443 - 12/18/02 11:07 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

hi!
I've read that calcium cloride (I'm using it to dry my first harvest), is recyclable... that is I can put in an oven to make water evaporate and then use it again.
Anyone has ever tryed it?
Which temperature is needed? How long?

Thanks 4 help!

Andrash

No replies...
then I suppose no one is using calcium cloride to dehidrate mushrooms.
I've read that the oven technic to reuse the dessicant is good for calcium sulphate... not calcium cloride. So probably I have the wrong dessicant. Then I have to throw everything away after use.
In any case the technic for reuse the calcium cloride is to keep it in an oven at 220 ?C in a very thin layer for one hour.

DO you think it can be a problem if I try to do the same with my calcium cloride... or everything will explode in my face???

There's something called a search engine. You type in what your looking for and it will try to find it for you. It's really easy. www.google.com is a good example of a search engine.

I know this doesn't answer your question but Frank really likes dehydrators. They are reusable, dry fast, cheap, and easy....and DO NOT hurt the quality of the finished procuct unless dried in an environment where the ambient temperatures are normal (60-85 degrees F.)......

Just buy a dessicator and some calcium chloride. Its much easier than any other forms of drying. And cleanup is easy too.

I've found the drierite (calcium sulphate) site....
Drierite
I think this should be the best dessiccant, since is rechargeable... differently from the calcium cloride that get exhausted and you throw it away...

Bye,

I never recycled CaCl, it was too cheap to bother.

$7 for ten pounds.

THe trick is to put them in an airtight container so that the only moisture involved is what's in the shrooms.

i disagree, after trying lots of varieties i was defintely most pleased with CaCl2. keep looking for it, the others just don't cut the mustard.

in the PF tek drying chamber (dessicant off the floor of a tubber ware tub, then a gap, then shrooms on a mesh) you can see the dessicant actually get wet and drip through to the base. pour it out, voila! even without fan-drying, it works like a dream.

Alright, we need someone to test it then. Ill send some colorful stuff to you ASAP, along with the shit that collects on the bottom of most drying chambers.

I think the pink shit might taste like fruit.

If you're looking for Calcium Chloride, you can find 3 pure lbs. of it at: http://www.earthstongue.com    It's about $4.

John, is the model in your signature into mycology?    :smirk:

Problem solved!!!
I've discovered a defrost feature on my oven... no heating, just fresh air.
I've tryed last night for 4 hours, and this morning the shrooms were very dryed... now I can go with dessicant without waste. In fact the first time I put mushrooms fresh directly with dessiccant... the started to spread mycelium, and the calcium cloride lost power. But know it has an easier work to do...
I payd 5 Euros(=$) for a little bag of calcium cloride... that's why I was worried about that waste... but now I think I will not have that problem...

Check your oven... maybe you find that feature...

Have a nice drying...

by the way, for anyone reading above - calcium sulphate is not good. that is gypsum - teeny bits added to grain jars aid in the shaking.

and JohnH - i'm no prude, i like porno pics as much as the next guy, but.... why not use a signature without shaven teens on?
