Hey guys.  My big cake is still producing mushrooms after several flushes, which I have you guys to thank for that.  Itโ€™s been producing solidly for a couple months.

I also started some smaller pf tek jar cakes.  One of them has fruited a single large mushroom once, then nothing for a month or so.  The other one, nothing.  When I open the jar lids they smell like concentrated ass.  I donโ€™t see any mold or fuzz or gray stuff, or yellow water or anything.  They look pretty normal but staannnkkky.  I was going to bust one up tomorrow for a bulk expansion,  but are they even any good

First cake.  Fruited once.  In an apothecary jar with loose fitting glass lid sitting on a jar of empty bullion cubes to keep off the jar floor.









Jar 2, never fruited slightly different t jar type with a couple holes drilled In metal lid.  Never fruited.  Been a couple months in this








Why do they stink so bad, and are they ok to use for bulk expansion?

Please throw those out. They are entirely in mold. You should also clean your space well because they have been sporulating for a long time. And do the cleaning with a mask if that's been brewing for months.

If anything ever smells rank, you should throw it.

Minor bacteria smells a bit like fermented fruit, and that's already an issue.

Anything more than that is a tosser.

I had a feeling they were bad.  Everyone told me my big bag cake in my mono-tub was moldy though when it wasnโ€™t and itโ€™s been fruiting for months non stop.  The smell on the jar cakes really threw me for a loop though.  They STINK.

I guess Iโ€™ll cut a chunk off my big cake to expand tomorrow instead and toss the jars.

My big cake:


Big cake started off as a grow bag moved to a montub.  Several people told me it was garbage when it wasnโ€™t.  Iโ€™m not real experienced at identifying garbage though.

I also donโ€™t see colors very well, and to be honest the little cakes look about the same as my big successful cake to me.  They just stink.  The stink it what made
Me question them.  I had the one actually fruit in that jar, once one single wang sized dong
And that was itโ€ฆthen it started stinking.

Alot of people may comment on this post questioning your common sense or sanity but I am not doing that. I don't think you are trolling, but I am worried you may be jumping into this with a literal foundational knowledge of zero. The cakes should smell like wet earth and nothing else. If they are pungent, sweet or powdery smelling in any way they are no good. Even if they smell great sometimes they are no good. But if they are any color besides cake color or solid white there is an immediate problem. It's the clearest indicator there is and should be an immediate signal to toss them and start over. :thumbup:

Do not expand that mycelium. People told you it looked bad. I'm glad it's fruiting. Only REALLY clean stuff gets expanded.



Please read the basics. And take care of yourself.

Yeah, the colorblind stuff makes sense. If you cannot see green on white, I don't think you can safely do a lot in this. Those cakes are covered in disgusting green slime.

Nothing should smell, nothing should be slimy.

Expanding cakes like you're planning isn't a good idea. Get a fresh start and for Christ's sake read the Hitchhikers Guide.

Sounds like you might be color-blind to green colors?

If so, use your nose. If a cake smells funky and gross, throw it out ASAP.

Yeah I am fairly severely colorblindโ€ฆgreen/red/blue/purple are very hard for me to tell the difference between any of them and gray.  Unless they are a vibrant shade.

You donโ€™t think my big cake in the tub I pictured is good to expand?  Itโ€™s been steadily producing mushrooms for a couple months.  If you see blue on it it might be bruising from picking mushrooms off it.  About a half dozen people on here told me not to fruit that cake and toss it when it came out of the bag, but I tried anyways and itโ€™s been doing well.  Then beef supreme convinced me to do his punish tek on it and punish the cake and itโ€™s been doing better ever since.  Itโ€™s probably produced 2 ounces of dried shrooms by now.  Since the little cakes are bad I was gonna try to expand that oneโ€ฆ.

"Expanding it" isn't a thing. Introducing pieces of spent substrate that's been out in open air collecting all sorts of nasties for months to fresh sterilized substrate is just gonna contam immediately. Collect some spores or take a clone from one of your fruits and start back fresh from square one, that's just how it works.

Iโ€™m not an agar guy yet, so I tried it the risky way.  I boiled a bag of brown rice for 10 mins, strained it out and rinsed with cold water.  Then I spread it out on a freshly washed cookie tray and let it dry for an hour under a ceiling fan I Took 2 single gallon ziplock bags and washed them out with dish soap and let them dry.  I picked a fresh healthy mushroom, split it in half by hand (with washed hands) and picked the inner guts out with fire sterilized tweezers.  I mixed the small chunks of mushroom insides with the brown rice and split it equally into the 2 bags.  I squeezed all the air out and rolled them up tight and threw em in the closet.  I guess Iโ€™ll see what happens.  Hopefully they donโ€™t mold over and I get 2 new good cakes.

this will mold over. please read the teks and actually follow them. You are creating health hazards for yourself, especially if you cant see green.

It's destined to fail unfortunately bub, cooking rice for 10 minutes isnt gonna sterilize it, and then running cold tap water over it and letting it sit in open air is inviting contams, and then stuffing it all into ziplock bags and sealing them with no air or ventilation is creating an anaerobic environment, which is gonna have the bacteria thriving. I'm not trying to be rude or shoot down your work but you really should do some reading in this thread before moving forward, it gas everything you need to know about getting started and also how to navigate the site using the search function properly.

Ahh I really like the jars looks like hiding small concealable cakes anywhere you want is easy with this setup. I wanna try. But I think I'll ditch the lid you been using. I'd prefer a ziploc filled with holes and rubber banded round the top. Not a scientist but I think the cakes suffocated and some anaroebic competitors took over.

My latest project similar to the size of growing vessel you got there. Except I couldn't pop this out and set neatly in a container since it ain't a wide mouth. I think I could just use this same jar next time and just drop a lil cake in it like you did.

Well, i guess weโ€™ll see.  Everyone told me the cake Ive been fruting from was garbage and to throw it out at the time.  Itโ€™s an experiment.  If it doesnt work it wont break my heart.  If it does work, bonus.  Iโ€™ll read up some more in the meantime and try to develop a better technique.  Im really really strongly opposed to getting into agar.  I cant have petri dishes and stuff sitting around the house wirh no way to explain them to family.  Ive just been playing around with spore syringes so far and have had pretty good luck, though i have produced some failures.  Its all a learning experience.  Im also sure People probably cultivated mushrooms hundreds of years ago without proper sterlization and all the science and knowledge we have today.  Im also sure there was probably a higher failure rate.

You can keep plates in a little cardboard box, way easier to hide than say, a glass jar with a pf cake in it. Also I don't really see how creating an environment where cube mycelium can't grow is experimentation, but you do you man. There's lots of resources here and folks that actively want to help you, that's what everyone posting here is trying to do, myself included.
