So popped it out of the jar. As I mentioned at the start this was done with a leftover hydrated coir, meaning that even the "protective barrier" was field capacity coir. Probably got a bit lucky that it seemingly worked, but also thought that odds can't be that bad as it's just thick layer of plain coir that had been standing without problems for that long anyways.

I kind of like how it's already popping through the top coir. Dunking it and it so suitably floats exactly submerged until the coir layer. Probably will add a thin layer of coir elsewhere too, after it has hydrated a bit.

Yeah I've done all of my cakes with just coir and flour so far. Well, some straw ones but they are their own thing.

It's a great use for leftovers in a bucket. Since it gets sterilized, just tap hydrating more is also very straightforward.

Plus no vermiculite to keep off fruits!

Nothing has given me 100% KSSS pheno. Would you say that this is normal for MS KSSS fruits? Or does it indicate more of a Koh Samui labeled as KSSS without knowledge of deeper intricacies?

I would say its "stable", just as well as "GT" or "Equador" produces equally (and theyre commercially available) stable fruits between syringes. Over time of course, stability may be affected by natural selection or when theyve produced thousands of spore syringes over time..but Id say thats close to impossible for MS, id have to be millions of variations over millions and so forth. Id say a spore syringe bought today will produce the same mushrooms it did 10 years back, supposing that the company chose clear randoms MS.

This cake had a small knot forming last night, it's a bump today.  I also gave them a light misting, surface beads make me HAPPY (spritz after pics)!

Did you end up adding a side layer of coir? It'd be very photogenic if they only fruit out of the top hat.

In hindsight, it really would be rather photogenic, but I did add coir to the sides too. So no “top hat” unfortunately.

Well I have a bit of a sad update. Unfortunately gnats got a foothold and while the cakes were starting to flush some more and I pulled a few fruits, I decided to pitch it. Just don’t need gnats right now. Gonna look to try again in winter. Need some better jars too, the one I have are just impossible to get the cakes out intact. I’m gonna still follow along, love to see people having success :rockon:

Sorry to hear pasty, managing some gnats as well but seems to have been contained away from main grow area.

Gotta say, I really like these containers.





12oz Solo Brand Deli containers. I get them at restaurant supply stores. The lids are also pp5, I've done two holes or 5 holes with a center one, and it seems good.

They don't deform easily, are the right size, flexible enough you can massage to break up millet. I've done grains in these directly using no prep with Yoshi ratios and it works. the lid has a tall gap so it doesn't let airflow in easily.

I liked using the ones Cronicr had in his post, straight from Dollarama. But after comparing with these, I get way more contaminates with that because they deform around the lip of the lid and that makes it not a good seal. Too often I see mold around the rims. They are also quite big at 750ml and take a longer time to colonize. Won't be using again for cakes I think.

These round ones colonize quick, and seem more contaminant resistant

I actually bought another brand yesterday, they were cheaper, looked sturdier, square, and made in canada. but now I'm hoping the lid doesn't fuck up as well. Snience tiem.

But definitely fruiting these in their containers, they go WAY too wide. Will be nicer to have top fruited jars with more vertical focus.
