ok, i can believe you maybe. Ive never tried them. But I can attest pan subbs were a completely different experience than psilocybe, at least ovoids. They were very visual and lacked the heavy dehabilitating body load of voids

And i have read testamonials from this forum of people saying they had no luck trying to fruit p. americanus, but if i am mistaken and they are as good as you say, you should give it a go and try for us all

Yeah,  these definitely have a different feel to them than the others,  or maybe it's just me

I would love to try and get these going!  It's hard to take prints from the small ones that I've been finding as of late though. By morning, they have deliquesced into maggot food.

This is where I have found nearly all of my finds,  because when it rains, this area floods and the logs stay underwater for a few days.  The last time that it rained was over a week ago and the temps have been 99 degrees for the past few days.  I hope it rains one more time before the season ends!

These guys seem to only grow out of the most well rotten woods as well.

I actually found a ton,  but most were already rotten  but the smallest ones  :mad2:  I wish that I would have known about this place last season

Well, why don't you take some rotten wood back to your place and drench them every time it rains? this should simulate your state's conditions. Maybe you could get them to fruit?

I tried that a few times. It's a no go. Maybe some mushrooms just weren't meant to be cultivated,  I reckon

I found a nice piece of wood with lots of mycellium growing on it and I brought it home. I'm going to try and see if I can keep the myc alive  :yesnod:

On a side note,  even with no rain in three weeks,  I can find just enough of these guys for a trip. Again, they were all over, but most all of them were already rotten and covered in maggots  :mad2:

What gets me,  is how these guys are able to fruit on bone dry wood
It's gotta be due to the extreme humidity we have here,  because even with no rain there are mushrooms all over the place when I go out hunting. my moist areas were devoid of them this time,  but the dry upland areas in the woods is where I found these guys yesterday,  crazy!

We are supposed to have a few days of rain coming up,  so I'm hoping to get at least one final flush before the season ends  :yesnod:

Wow, you must have some strong ones in KY. They blue like crazy. I bet the core of the wood is moist and thats how they're fruiting, but starting to dry. Don't forget mushrooms are the fruiting body of the fungus. If the fungus is stressed, It will put a mushroom out to spread spores (if it can)

They are man!

I actually like these better than cubes and ovoids.

I took a few nice dark pink spore prints,  so I'm planning on spreading them on some rotten logs around my house to see if maybe they will fruit next season.

That wood in the flooded areas never has a chance to dry up,  this is why I can find them every single time I go out even with no rain in weeks.

We have three good days of rain coming up,  so fingers crossed that I get at least one more fruiting from them. last time I went out the pickens were very slim.

U might be able to increase your yields in your wild spots by sealing the ends of logs. I know it sounds stupid but this is how wood is prepared for around a year to dry so it doesn't warp or crack. The way it works is it limits evaporation from the end grain. Maybe stupid but idk, if u got extra paint laying around might be worth an experiment lol :smirk:

Actually, on second thought if this wood is submerged underwater that may actually limit how much it absorbs which could be counterproductive

Oh man,  there is no way. These guys only fruit from heavily rotted logs that fall apart if you even touch them. Most of the logs are also in pieces that have basically turned into soil and sunk into the mud/ground.

I hope to be still living in this area next season,  now that I know that they fruit in abundance. The place I moved from last year had absolutely no psychoactive mushrooms of any kind and this was my first year not to have to travel a ton of miles just to find ovoids. I love it here,  because I get ovoids in the spring, then the pluteus start shortly after and go until fall  :yesnod:

You know what?  Out of the plethora of mushrooms that grow here,  so far,  I have found no active gymnopilus whatsoever.  I just don't understand that at all

Ive found em but i dont search, so never kept any. You should send a sample of your pluteus to be tested

Tested for alkaloid levels... cuz you've got us all curious now that you place them above ovoids!

Well,  I can attest to these being very potent,  at least they are in my neck of the woods.

I recently found this.

"  Pluteus americanus produces psychoactive effects primarily due to the presence of the tryptamine alkaloids psilocybin and psilocin in its fruiting bodies.3 Quantitative analysis has detected psilocybin at 0.12–0.24% dry weight, psilocin at 0.01–0.03% dry weight, and baeocystin at 0.02–0.04% dry weight, levels comparable to some Psilocybe species but varying by specimen and environmental factors.
These compounds are metabolized in the human body, with psilocybin converting to psilocin, which interacts with serotonin receptors (primarily 5-HT2A) to induce altered states of consciousness.20 Reported effects from anecdotal human consumption mirror those of other psilocybin-bearing fungi, including mild to moderate visual distortions such as enhanced colors and subtle geometric patterns, altered perception of time and space, elevated mood, introspection, and potential synesthesia.
Onset typically occurs 20–60 minutes after ingestion of dried material, with peak effects at 2–4 hours and duration of 4–6 hours, depending on dose.5 Estimated effective doses start at 1–2 grams dried for subtle perceptual shifts, escalating to 3–5 grams for more profound experiences, though potency inconsistencies necessitate caution.5 Adverse reactions may include nausea, yawning, anxiety, or dysphoric episodes, particularly at higher doses or in unprepared users, but no species-specific toxicities beyond general psilocybin effects have been documented in clinical literature.
Human trials on Pluteus americanus are absent, with effects inferred from alkaloid profiles and user reports; individual variability in response arises from factors like set, setting, and metabolism.  "

And this site lists them as being comparable to cubes in potency.

https://healing-mushrooms.net/pluteus-americanus

All I know is that I ate just a few fresh specimens each time and they were super potent  :yesnod:

I have a jar saved up for a special occasion and I can't wait to try a larger dose!

Found in Northern California on dead hardwood

Visible blue bruising at base of stipe when picked.

Thoughts?

Yep,  you got one

Sadly,  the season ended here. They fruited all summer long with barely any rain,  then as soon as October hit they stopped  :mad2:
We even got over 12 hours of hard rain right after my last finds and that was still the end

This was identified as Volvopluteus by another trust observer - it was deducted that the "bluing," at the base was rather mold, which apparently was removed quite easily upon further inspection.

Thank you for your help!

Ah,  I saw the pink gills and blue at the base,  so I assumed that it was one.
