First actives of the season(pics)
    #2690280 - 05/17/04 07:33 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I was up all night trying to get my sleep schedule back to normal. Around eh... 6am I decided to have a walk around the yard just for the hell of it. I checked our grass compost pile, and low and behold, my patch of Panaeolus subbalteatus are back.

I found 2 large P. subbalteatus with wavy margins due to age. One of the subbs actually briused the typical blue green color that you'd see with other actives... very rare for subbs. I also found 1 other active species of Panaeolus that I've yet to make a postive ID on. All I know is that they're active, have caps that are a single color(usally tan/cream colored), drop black spores, grow in clusters, and often briuse blue(although sometimes it's hard to detect). I believe the mystery panaeolus could be Panaeolus microspora.

The pictures I took are not the regular 6 megapixel pictures you're used to seeing from me, that camera was lost in a fire(long story, talk to me on AIM if you're interested in hearing about it). I will however be getting a brand new Sony DSC-F828 8MP camera within the next 2 weeks(wewt!). Anyways, here's some craptastic 1MP pictures of the Pans:

The caps of the Pans in comparison to a regular cigarette.

Above view, mystery pan on the far right.

Another comparison for length.

A picture of the brusing reaction on the one particular sub. It may not look blue/green in the picture but those who are familiar with this type of brusing reaction know what is going on in this picture.

I've discovered a little trick when it comes to briusing subs. Don't pinch them hard! Very slightly squeeze the stems. Brusing happened within 5 minutes and could only be seen at certain angles.

People who are new to subb hunting: Notice how gnarly the stem looks on that one on the left, all twisted and crazy. That is typical of Panaeolus subbalteatus, as are the thicker stems. Pan subbs tend to have much beefier stems than Pan foens do. The caps of subbs will also do weird things like curling up and growing all deformed(not perfectly round).

I'll be checking the patch regularly and hopefuly will have some more eye candy for you guys and mind candy for myself

-Gumby

I just went out to the patch again to see if I missed any mushrooms when I first went picking... I'll be damned, look what I found:

Picture perfect Panaeolus subbalteatus growing from a grass compost heap.

An above view. Note that the orange coloring isn't normal for this species... not quite sure why that happened, normaly they're a brownish pinkish color.

Well, they have big lighters and small ones so that can get confusing... Cigarettes are always the same size unless they're 100s :P

HI Gumby Dude. Vry nice photographs. Need at least a fresh ounce to get equal to P. cubensis high.

On horse or cow manure or stable shavings mixture or compost mixture habitat?

mj

They're growing from just grass clipping compost. They've been growing from this spot for years. Everytime I mow the lawn, I just give the patch more food

^^Valerian root and melatonin work well, along with an assortment of benzodiazepines.

Sweet find! I wish I had a nice P. Subb. spot in my yard; I guess I'll have to look instead. Keep up the good work and happy shroomin. Good packing job on the Camel light, btw.
