I'm sorry to hear about your situation, Northerner; but as ZeeBow mentioned, you're not alone. We're here with you. I'm glad things got better in the presence of your daughter.

I can only share what I know. And what I know, based on my experience, is that AA worked for me, just for today as in OP's username.

This is my reality, that I'm willing to accept, that's saved my ass thus far. It doesn't guarantee me everlasting success, but I know for certain that otherwise I'd be f*cked:

The words people remember are on page 85 of Alcoholics Anonymous, in the chapter called Into Action: 'What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition' (page 85). In plain language, sobriety is not a prize we win once and keep forever.

It is renewed one day at a time, and it holds only as long as we keep doing the spiritual work that produced it. Two sentences earlier the book is blunt: 'We are not cured of alcoholism' (page 85). A reprieve is not a pardon. It is a stay, granted for today.

Regarding maintenance of my spiritual condition & doing the spiritual work that produced it, I share with y'all, respectfully, what I'm continued to be told in the groups:

-Go to your meetings,
-get sponsored
-Stay away from the first drink (don't gotta worry about all the rest otherwise)
-read the literature and Do service work (eventually)

Take care everyone, you're worth it

OUR CHILDREN

September 26

The alcoholic may find it hard to re-establish friendly relations with his children. . . . In time they will see that he is a new man and in their own way they will let him know it. . . . From that point on, progress will be rapid. Marvelous results often follow such a reunion.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 134

While on the road to recovery I received a gift that could not be purchased. It was a card from my son in college, saying, "Dad, you can't imagine how glad I am that everything is okay. Happy Birthday, I love you." My son had told me that he loved me before.

It had been during the previous Christmas holidays, when he had said to me, while crying, "Dad, I love you! Can't you see what you're doing to yourself?" I couldn't. Choked with emotion, I had cried, but this time, when I received my son's card, my tears were tears of joy, not desperation.

WITHOUT RESERVATION

September 27

When brimming with gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, . . .

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 37

While practicing service to others, if my successes give rise to grandiosity, I must reflect on what brought me to this point. What has been given joyfully, with love, must be passed on without reservation and without expectation. For as I grow, I find that no matter how much I give with love, I receive much more in spirit.

LOVE WITHOUT STRINGS

September 28

Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 89

Sponsorship held two surprises for me. First, that my sponsees cared about me. What I had thought was gratitude was more like love. They wanted me to be happy, to grow and remain sober. Knowing how they felt kept me from drinking more than once.

Second, I discovered that I was able to love someone else responsibly, with respectful and genuine concern for that person's growth. Before that time, I had thought that my ability to care sincerely about another's well-being had atrophied from lack of use.

To learn that I can love, without greed or anxiety, has been one of the deepest gifts the program has given me. Gratitude for that gift has kept me sober many times.

Still haven't had an urge to drink. Ive thought about drinking but not an urge. It'd just be nice to be able to drink. I got meds I can't mix with alcohol anyway so that helps with not drinking.

well done JBG, gj man

yea bro, any motive to not drink is a great reason to not do so.

I used to live by the opposite just a couple of years ago; any reason was a great excuse to drink, always, under any circumstance. And I don't drink like a normal person, i never will... What a life.

even as I loved it when I was killing myself with it and still could.

so thank you all because I'm unable do it on my own

A DAILY TUNE-UP

October 17

Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 85

How do I maintain my spiritual condition? For me it's quite simple: on a daily basis I ask my Higher Power to grant me the gift of sobriety for that day!

I have talked to many alcoholics who have gone back to drinking and I always ask them: "Did you pray for sobriety the day you took your first drink?" Not one of them said yes.

As I practice Step Ten and try to keep my house in order on a daily basis, I have the knowledge that if I ask for a daily reprieve, it will be granted.

Yeah, if wasn't for the schizophrenia I don't know that I could do it I'd probably still be drinking.

That is very useful.

Right now I'm feeling pretty afraid of the coming winter.
Got turned down by someone I thought a lot about. Someone really special in my eyes. For reasons that have nothing to do with me, nor can I do anything about them. Its very very rare for me to meet anyone like that, so I was hoping a lot.
So right now the future seems dark and cold. The uncertainty and disappointment are grinding pretty bad inside.
When I was drinking it brought the illusion of being held warmly, without anything being asked of me. I miss that dearly and recognize that I want that feeling from people not poison. Too bad the poison is ready on market shelf, people are more difficult to access.

Today is rough, tomorrow might be different. Wish yall the best and thanks for being here.
