Thought I'd post here since it's my first non brf grow and of course I feel like I'm running into trouble. Spawned 2 shoeboxes 28 days ago following this tek, still zero pins which is where my concern lies. Had clean agar, clean spawn, posted pics to confirm as well. I followed this tek to a T minus my coir may have been at field capacity or just slightly less, definitely not as dry as the tek(probably my only KNOWN mistake currently). Mixed up 1 myco quart with 1 quart of coir, cased with half a quart for both boxes. On one box I did my best to squeeze most of the water out by hand after noticing I was at field capacity. Noticed it was slightly too wet so I unlatched my lids maybe two weeks or so ago and this is where I stand currently. They get 12 hours of indirect sunlight a day. During the day the temps are between 77-82, at night 70-75. Any help or insight would be appreciated. One part of my gut is telling me I'm being impatient, the other part is telling me that my isolations from agar are non producers.
Edit: As a edit, they're TW's.

Lids should have never been latched. If they starve for air too long they just stop doing anything. Sounds like that may have happened here. Give it another week and if no change, start over. Lids should never be latched and I personally wouldn’t stack these either. I’m about to set up my shoeboxes tomorrow and I’m going to trust the process, but although I really like the idea of a near-zero misting solution I’m a little worried about not giving enough FAE.

Woops. I guess I misread something. Should I put the latches under the lid or just leave it unlatched you think?

According to the tek it says the lids should stay latched until they get big enough to reach the lid….

What I read is that it should stay latched until pinning. So, I think this is dependent on the RH of the grow area. You need evaporation for pinning. I don’t see how you’re going to get evaporation with the lid latched. However, for not having to mist, leaving the lid latched for awhile is probably a good idea. Again, I just see the timing on unlatching to be very grow space dependent. I left mine unlatched and went away for a week. Then came back and misted.

Interesting. I’ve read that these shoeboxes get enough FAE even with the lids latched. Will have to wait and see. Just spawned these 2 days ago and already seeing myc popping through the casing. I’m concerned my sub was too wet though or I misted too much though as I can see a good amount of wetness down the sides of the tub. This sub was exactly how OP described. Had to squeeze the crap out of it to even get one drop. Also misted as they did for 20 seconds. Everything seems to be looking alright otherwise though

Hey guys just wanted to give a quick update. It's been about 2 weeks and nothing still on both boxes. About a week ago I said fuck it and decided to break up and mix one of the boxes. That one has seen new mycelium growth but still no pins on either one.

Meanwhile I just got another box going. This time I definitely nailed the field capacity and did a proper spray on top. I'm leaving the lid unlatched from day 1. I'll keep y'all posted.

On a side note just wanted to say the tek DOES say to keep the lid latched. Unless I missed something reading through the 60+ pages and that's changed it was a PERSONAL disappointment that my first non brf grow didn't go off without a hitch. Fingers crossed for this one though, live and learn😊

After a thorough re-reading I’m agreed. It does say that. Best potential explanation as to why that might have worked was that they made the containers differently at the initial time of writing. But that’s just a guess.

I left mine unlatched from the get-go. I did have to keep an eye on moisture after the first week or so, but I’m also no using the exact same shoe boxes.

Best of luck. Fingers crossed for you.

I can say from experience the purple handled shoeboxes should not have their lids latched. Although there is still some FAE with lids latched it's not enough. With lids latched I get nothing but puddles of water on the myc. Maybe if you live in the Arizona dessert you might get enough FAE with latched but not in most places.

It's true the initial tek says to do this but it was also written 5+ years ago and we have learned since then

I think the lid latching is also very shoebox specific. It seems that the purple latch Sterilite 6qt boxes have a tighter tolerance and will actually choke out the substrate when latched. I now primarily use the white/grey lid Sterilite shoeboxes that you get in a 10 pack for like 10 bucks. Those ones most definitely don't have a solid air seal and seem to do well "latched" or closed. I usually follow the Tek to a T, close my white lids and leave them for like a week. The only time I usually unlatch mine is when the mushrooms get tall enough to push up on the lids.

I have noticed if you stack these white/grey lid boxes multiple high the bottom one will be more choked out than the top, so if I stack I usually only go one on top of each other.

I'm pretty sure most newbies are coming to this Tek when starting into grains, and leaving PF Tek. A lot of them have bacterial spawn (I know I did) and would confuse poor grain spawn with the Tek not working. Once you nail down clean spawn, you should be getting solid tubs.

TLDR; Different 6qt Tubs have different FAE & bad spawn ruins good tub technique.

:whathesaid:

The white/grey snap lid Sterilite shoeboxes allow more passive FAE to occur than the ones with latches and flat lids.  Adjust as necessary for your environment.

I felt my lids latched until pinning and then unlatched to allows more FAE. These were the results

I finally found some of these purple handled sterilite shoe boxes and when I put the lid on and latched it seems pretty much air tight, and there's not a gap when it's not latched either so I'm closing the handle then putting the lid on to created a tiny gap around the entire perimeter.

I made up 3 GT shoeboxes today, 2 with a 20 second squirt and one with a 10 second squirt because it seemed to wet and i want to fuck around and find out. As per the tek the sub is just under field capacity, and everything else except the lid latching I followed perfectly.

I'll update here once I get a flush.

They may look air tight when latched but they are not. I suggest just putting lid on and leave it unlatched. You will get too much FAE with the handles up and lid resting on top.

Came here to say that — in my climate I need to have shoebox lids askew at quite an angle to avoid pooling water.

This thread is very interesting to me when it comes to understanding surface conditions:
